Couple of questions about schools in Greenwich and Westminster around 1925-1940

Hi all,

I spoke to my grandmother yesterday who went to Calvert Road Infant School in Greenwich. I am having trouble finding where this school would have been located. I read somewhere it was renamed Annandale School and didn't close until 12 years ago, but I am still clueless as to where it was/is. I know the original building is long-gone but I want to place a pin on my genealogy map on Google where the location was.

Next my grandmother told me that my grandfather went to school at the 'Polytechnic School' in London. When I asked her where it was, she said it was in the city and he used to get a bus over the River every day (from south London). After some Googling, I'm not sure whether it could be the Regent Street Polytechnic School? He was born in 1922 so I guess he would have gone there sometime in the early to mid-30s. I'd really like to know more about it

Any help would be great.

According to my 1937 map, the school was situated between Calvert Road and Annandale Road, at the junction with Woolwich Road.

Using google maps streetview, I would suggest it's now been replaced by a housing estate.

According the the London Metropolitan Archives catalogue, Calvert Road School opened in 1879 and was renamed Annandale School in 1951

Their catalogue reference is

LCC/EO/DIV06/CAL

They do have some surviving records, the latest ones are not available to view though.

There were other polytechnics closer to the City of London. Depends whether you mean the City of Westminster or the City of London.

Dawnsh is spot on with Calvert Road school.  I grew up in the area.   The school was bounded on three sides by Annandale Road, Calvert Road and Woolwich Road, and I remember you could see over the playground wall from the double-decker bus going along Woolwich Road. 

P.S. I'd like to thank the original poster - I've done 'psuedo drives' along Woolwich Road on Google Street View (I don't live in that area now), and you often realise that buildings have changed, but sometimes you can't think of what was there before !  You've now refreshed my memory
