Thompsons in Yarmouth
« on: Saturday 28 January 12 11:41 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone researching the Thompson Family that lived in Housego buildings in the 1880s, the parents were James (1857) and Anne. James was a general labourer and later a painter, James W (1885) his son (my grandfather) was also a painter on windmills and later a miller in Ipswich.

I would like to confirm the parents of James (1857) Likely candidates are James (1822) and Rachael, or James (1821) and Susan. Only the fathers name appears on the marriage certs and since both candidates had the same occupation I am none the wiser.

Can anybody help here!

Thanks for the info, I felt that James and Rachael were possible, but I am still not sure. There is also a Thomas (1822) and Susan (1825) with a wedding date of 1844 lurking in the background. they also have a number of children that fit the expected pattern I haven't found much data on them yet.

If I have the correct marriage here - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11775-143133-74?cc=1416598&wc=13675852  - James father is not shown on the marriage entry, which might imply he didn't know who his father was.

I also see on the 1881 census entry that James had a middle initial - "W". Do you have any idea what it stood for?

Have you found "your" James on the 1861 census?

Hi again,

Have you considered this one?  A "James Wright Thompson" baptised by Elizabeth Thompson at Great Yarmouth, 1856 - no father given.

It's difficult to read, but looks like this James was born 1854, and baptised 1856 - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-14263-27034-67?cc=1823613&wc=9020014

Thanks for the help

I am now fairly certain the the parents of James (1855/7) were Thomas and Susan (searle or scarle) who married in 1843 at St Julians Norwich. They are listed as shoemakers in 1841 through to 1861 and there is a family tradition of shoemaking so they may be the right family. James did not follow this and is listed as a general labourer, I believe he worked on the windmills because my grandfather recalled being taken to work by his father when he was about 12, his first job was to paint part of a windmill sail.

It is possible that Susan died around 1861 and there was a second marriage since I have now found the same combination of names and birth dates, but with a different younger wife plus two more children. The family is still resident in Norwich but my branch seems to have moved towards Yarmouth, a logical move because Yarmouth was growing quickly at this stage with the new silk mill.

I am not sure about the W in James (1855/7) but it may be William, this is only because my grandfather said he had the same name as his father and he was James William
