Peter Aungier and Mary Aungier
« on: Saturday 28 January 12 10:23 GMT (UK) »
Peter Aungier played some lawn tennis in Ireland and England in the early 1880s, but it is very difficult to track down any concrete biographical information on him. That said, a 55-year-old Peter Aungier appears on the 1901 Census of Ireland, which states that he's living in Foxrock, married, a land proprietor and Roman Catholic. Also that he was born in Ireland. But it's virtually impossible to connect him to lawn tennis.

A Mary Aungier also appears in one or two draws for women's singles events at lawn tennis tournaments in the early 1880s. It seems likely that she was related to Peter, perhaps his sister (definitely not his wife).

A Google search for Peter Aungier tends to bring up Saint Peter's Church, which used to be located in Aungier Street, Dublin. That's not really a help. I believe Aungier, which sounds French, is an old Huguenot name.

Would anyone be able to provide or point to any concrete information on Peter Aungier's or Mary Aungier's origins and later life?

a few additional details on the Aungier family mentioned on the 1901 census. Shows that Peter was born in England ?

The location at Foxrock would be very close to Carrickmines tennis club - assuming it was at the same location back then.

Based on baptisms the family lived for a time during the 1880s at Northbrook Road, which is between Leeson Street and Ranelagh - close to both Fitzwilliam and Mount Pleasant LTCs..

Baptism of Jacobus Aungier - 4 Nov 1881
Baptism of Julia Mary Aungier - 15 Aug 1884
Baptism of Gertrude Mary Aungier - 27 Sept 1882

There's a possible marriage for Peter and Julia in Naas, Co. Kildare - two entries in the index - so maybe both a civil and church marriage ?

  Name: Peter Aungier
  Registration district: Naas
  Event type: Marriage
  Quarter and year: Jan-Mar 1881
  Volume:   2 / Page:   822 and 827

  Name : Julia Scully
  [same index entries as Peter]

I dont see Peter or Julia on the 1911 return, or likely deaths for Peter  on the BMD Index..

If you put "peter aungier" dublin into Google search it eliminates entries for Aungier St. in Dublin, etc.

Here's the Peter Aungier and family you found in 1901 census-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Stillorgan/Foxrock/1314435/

Family tree shows wife as Julia Scully, etc.

Added after seeing Shane's post- Peter died 1914 according to family tree.

Here they are in 1911 (mistranscribed as Qungin)-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Donnybrook/Simmonscourt/43612/

good find!... his writing is a little difficult to read on that form.

I dont quite believe some of the details on that Tree - Julia Scully born Logan County, Illinois, U.S.A, turns up with place of birth as Ireland on the English 1871 census then appears on both the Irish census returns with place of birth of 'Dublin City'.

I just searched for a Peter in 1911 census born in England! The family tree gives his birthplace as Ireland but both census say England but it might be possible for Mark to contact tree owner to see if there is a tennis connection.

Thanks to Shane and aghadowey for the replies and all of the helpful information. I see that a Mr Aungier and a Miss Aungier played in the mixed doubles event at the inaugural Irish Lawn Tennis Championships, held in Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin, in early June 1879. This is probably Peter and his sister (?) Mary.

Some sources give Peter's year of birth as 1858, but he gives his age as 46 in the 1901 Census of Ireland. Either way, he would have been in his early or mid-twenties in 1879. I looked through the "Irish Times" for a death notice for him in the year 1914, but found nothing.

If he's Roman Catholic, I think I'd expect his Death Notice to be in the Freemans Journal, not the Times.
