William Kenealy

In Bassett's Kilkenny Guide & Directory 1884 there is a William Kenneally listed for Garryduff, PILTOWN AND FIDDOWN this is from one of the research sites that I use. There is also a David Kenneally listed in the townland of Garryduff for the same directory in 1884 would he still be living there in 1884 before going to Australia? he would be 25/26 years old your David?

We have searched the Tipperary/Kilkenny areas for Ellens marriage etc to no avail, I am sure something will turn up.

Great thought- we will certainly write to those you have suggested.

As for David Kenealy, according to his death certificate, he died 1934 and on the certificate he was reported to have lived in Australia for 55 years which would then mean he arrived in 1879 if the details are correct.  We thought that the length of time 55 years may have been a guesstimate.....

He was married in Aust in 1886 so there is the possibility it might be the same person.

Your mention of David in Garryduff in the Bassetts guide is the first David to have been found in searches.

As an aside, do you think it would be worth our purchasing Bassetts if we can find a copy, my wifes family will be even harder to trace - most are Kellys and Durneys of Ireland of course. Or this might be easier!

We are certainly enjoying the research and the knowledge we are gaining from looking for our ancestors.

You might never find some of the records like David's baptism or the marriage of William and Ellen some records were never recorded or the priest at the time may have taken them with him when he left parish or they were simply destroyed at some stage also it is around famine time/penal laws so administration was the last thing on a lot of people's minds.

I wonder is there any truth in the grocer story the rest seem to be farmers. David in 1884 is down as a farmer. Perhaps they ran a small grocer shop in Garryduff at one time. Or William may have lived in a local town like on Carrick on Suir at some stage.

I'm looking for a little information on a different William Kenealy, a Kilkenny man who was strong in the Gaelic League in the 1900s; he lived in the city of Kilkenny then, and was a journalist, according to the 1901 census of Ireland.  I'm wondering if he married; a later letter has him engaged to a rather well-off fiancee.

Hi,
The William and Florence you refer to were my grandparents. Their son Kieran was my father. William's father, also William, was in fact born in Cloyne, Co Cork but was Lord Mayor of Kilkenny twice - 1872 & 1873. He was very heavily involved in the Land Leagues. He married a Rose Maxwell and had fourteen children. William, my grandfather was the last born shortly before his father died.
