James Dargavel Copland - What Regiment?
« on: Thursday 26 January 12 02:11 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the Regiment and dates of Service of James Dargavel Copland b. 1889 at 15 Jamieson Street,  Govanhill Glasgow.
The family claim he was in "the Scottish Regiment" whatever that means.
I am interested in finding out the Regiment, His rank, dates of service and the areas of campaigns.
He married: Margaret and later Florence Halbert.
So far I have not been able to find the exact record. Any help would be much appreciated.  Also interested in the uniform and general information about the regiment he was part of.  Thank you

Welcome to Rootschat and the Armed Forces Board, iwccc.
This may not be the correct soldier but there is a medal card for a James D. Copland who served with the 15th (Glasgow Tramways) Highland Light Infantry, service number 22692, rank - Private. The 15th were formed on 2nd September 1914 and after training etc joined the 32nd Division and were sent to France in November 1915. From this time they were stationed in France and Flanders until the end of the war. Not wanting to send you down the wrong road, so to speak, but at least you now have something to go on to further your research and to look up on Ancestry or FindMyPast to see if this man's records survived and also to see if  it is the one that you are looking for.

Probably a coincidence but my name is john dargavel copland. My great grandparents were elizabeth dargavel and robert co(u)pland from dumfriesshire. Would be glad of any info you have that could help me trace the history of the dargavels and coplands.

Hi Old Rowley,   Hope I mistaken but I wonder if I missed reply to your post of 26th January.  If I did - so sorry.
Thank you for all the information you sent.  I think this must be our man - James Dargavel Copland from Glasgow.  When I get a chance I will try and follow your suggestions and look up more on Ancestry and 'FindMyPast.  Once again, much appreciated.

I found two casualty reports for J. D. Copland, 22692, H.L.I., only a month apart, so could be the same event. Address they held for next-of-kin was at Irvine.

The Scotsman, 07 August, 1916.
Wounded – Highland Light Infantry
Copland, 22692, J. (Irvine.)

The Scotsman, 06 September, 1916.
Wounded – Highland Light Infantry
Copland, 22692, J. D. (Irvine.)

Thanks Tyrannosaurus,  Looks like this is our James Dargavel Copland.  Hadn't realized that he had been wounded so this is important information for our family.
Does it say what rank he held?
I'm not sure at this stage about the next of kin being in Irvine - more work for me to check out.
From memory I think he was in the Glasgow (Tramways) Bat.
Thanks again - very helpful.

Hi Skoosh,  Thank you so much for the link info.  It was great seeing the 17th Bat marching along.  Couldn't help but imagine that it was the 15th Bat. and our James Dargavel Copland marching off to war - certainly helped seeing what life was like in Glasgow in 1914/5.  Can't wait to share it with the family.  Thanks again
