In the meantime, have you tried parish registers.

The Catholic Diocese of Christchurch has an 1840-1904 Baptisms Index CD which covers most of the South Island north of Otago. You could start a thread asking for a look-up.

Have already checked this resource - no listing for BIRCHALL or variants.

Thankyou both for your assistance and advice.

Yes, Roy Peter BIRCHALL (sometimes listed as Peter Roy but called Roy) was Harold's son (and is my husband's grandfather).  He was born 31 Mar 1901 in South Melbourne and his brother Harold Edwin was born 1903.  Roy married Lila Rita Veale on 22 Aug 1925.  Their father Harold died 1 Aug 1908 so they were really raised by their mother, Lucinda.

I had not thought to try the Methodist archives nor the Christchurch library (particularly given the current status of things there) and will do so.  Both our families (mine and my husband's) have strong links to the Methodist Church (now Uniting Church of Australia here).  So will pursue that both here and in NZ.

Thanks,

EJB

I'll be visiting the library this weekend so will check the BDM NZ births fiche

Hi again...

Have had a look on the NZ BDM birth fiches for the 1860's. The only BIRCHALL birth in Canterbury that I could see was...

1865/384 BIRCHALL, Winifred Ann

1865 = year birth registered
384 = place birth registered (Christchurch)

This is the same birth as "1865/1077 BIRCHALL, Winifred Ann" listed on the BDM NZ website.

Any Winifred's in the family :-)

Regards
Beg

Hi Beg,

Thanks for going to the trouble of searching the birth fiches. I must have missed that one on the NZ BDM site - I had concluded that there were no Birchalls born in that period!

I am not aware of any Winifreds  in the family tree, but will double check with my in-laws today. Meanwhile I ordered the birth certificate anyway, just to get a lead, any lead.   ;)

Regards,

Esther

Thanks, Althea.

Seemingly Winifred is not related then.  And none of my husband's  Birchall ancestor's names appear either! But there are a few Mary Ann/Marion Sutherlands I can check out.

Thank you again.

Death

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz

"Wanganui Chronicle"  - 8 January 1902 - Deaths - page 2

BIRCHALL ... on the 6th instant at her brother's residence, Wilson Street, Winifred Ann BIRCHALL, aged 36 years.  R.I.P.
----------------------------------------------

It appears that Winifred Ann was the daughter of James Stanley BIRCHALL and his wife Ellen.

The brother is John BIRCHALL (at Wilson Street, Wanganui electoral roll 1896) ... he is also mentioned in the 1905 death notice of his mother Ellen.

Although James Stanley BIRCHALL hailed from Tasmania, it seems unlikely he is connected to the others of same surname already mentioned here.

Amongst other notices of his death in 1881 (aged 62), was a brief obituary.
"Observer" - 19 March 1881 - Personal

Mr James BIRCHALL, the oldest Printer in New Zealand, died at Wanganui the other day.   Deceased assisted in bringing out the first newspaper printed in the Colony.
---------------------------------------

Tasmanian newspapers also recorded his death ... stating that he was a Printer -  for many years foreman of the "Hobart Town Mercury".
The family was still resident in Hobart in June 1860 when their young son died.

James Stanley BIRCHALL appears on the 1870-71 Canterbury - Christchurch West electoral roll.  In 1875-76 he was recorded as residing at Wanganui.

Hi again,

I did look into James Stanley Birchall a while back - he was the only Birchall regularly appearing on the Electoral Rolls over the years. But I agree there does not seem to be any connection to my Birchalls.

My father-in-law advises he had found Winifred Ann BIRCHALL in his research some years ago and eliminated her as a relative.

You have all given me some new sources to look into l through and I thank you so much for your efforts.

Regards,

Esther
