Lonsdales in Ireland
« on: Wednesday 25 January 12 21:25 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any information on Lonsdale (Lownsdale) in Ireland. records show that they lived in/around Killead, Aghagallon, Aghalee, Shankill. Common names for males are Moses, Thomas, Robert.
A number of family members moved to Scotland around 1861 and lived in Gartsherrie, Coatbridge. My earliest record is Moses 1805 - 1870, married Ann Bunting, 5 Nov 1831 at Christchurch,  Lurgan.
Any assisstance greatly appreciated.

Part of the 1851 census for Co Antrim has survived which includes parts of the parishes of Killead, Aghalee, Ballinderry & Aghagallon. You may want to check them:

I have a GGGGrandfather Arthur Doyle m Mary Lonsdale in Aghagallon 16 Feb 1813.

Arthur's son, Henry, was a witness at the marriage of William John Lonsdale

There are, as you say, a few different spellings. I haven't managed to connect any of them as yet.

Any information on Mary Lonsdale and William Lonsdale would be much appreciated. Both William & Mary are fairly common names in my family. As Lonsdale is not a typical Irish name I would like to learn how it originated there. My Lonsdales left Ireland for Scotland c.1861/2

There’s 72 Lonsdales in the 1901 Irish census. Most are in Co Antrim, Belfast and adjacent counties. Most are Church of Ireland. One interpretation of that is that they are descendants of families of English origin who settled in Ireland. Typically any time from the early 1600s onwards.

Thank you for this Elwyn. I have assumed similar as there is a Lonsdale influence around the North West of England. I do have some information that gives Thomas Lonsdale 1667, Thomas Lonsdale1699, Moses Lonsdale 1750, Robert Lonsdale 1789. Absolutely no supporting evidence other than the forenames appear continue to appear throughout the family. I do not know the origin of this information.

I have a note of an Elizabeth Lonsdale (1820-1906) who married a William Bunting (d 1861) both of Aghagallon. I'd be interested in anything more on both families. They had seven children and are my 3x great grandparents.

Hi wgransden,
You possibly have this but there is a will, complete with image, in PRONI for William Bunting of Aughagallon. See http://applications.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_WillsCalendar/WillsSearch.aspx
