How to find results of Fatal Accident Inquiry?
« on: Tuesday 24 January 12 23:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I was wondering if someone could tell me how to find the results of a Fatal Accident Inquiry for my grgrandfather John Henry Moss.  He was a Marine Pilot on the Firth of Forth and was crushed between a steamship and the launch Dec of 1923.

If you look at the death certificate on Scotland's People, it will either give the cause of death or leave a blank. In either case it will likely then have a note in the margin referring to an entry in the Register of Corrected Entries. Scroll down the screen until you see the link to the RCE and that will take you to details of the outcome of the inquest.

It is also worthwhile looking for any reports in the newspapers at the time of the death.

Graham.

Thanks Graham.
Because I could not trace my grgrandfather from England I befriended someone in Scotland and he found John's army service and when he died for me.  He did not send me a copy of the origional death certificate but he did tell me that he sustained a fractured pelvis and the bronchial pneumonia he suffered supervened the injuries and there would be an inquiry as per the RCE Jan 24 1924.
Which papers would I try to look at to see if I can find the results or would this be all there was?

Hi Weasel1,

In the Scotsman on 3rd Jan 1924, there is a notice saying that Sheriff of Lothians and Peebles is to hold 5 fatal accident inquiries inluding a John Henry Moss, marine pilot on board SS "Avant" of Copenhagen, then lying in Leith Roads, Leith. Inquiry on 10th Jan, 1924.

Will  now search for a result.

Hi weasel1,

On the National Archives of Scotland website, there is a page which advises inquiry was held on 10th Jan 1924, but lumped together with other inquiries.

National Archives of Scotland Reference SC39/66/91, you may have to contact them about availability and possible result if any.

Hi Weasel

The RCE says he was crushed between two boats and the pneumonia followed on. If you'd like a copy please PM me you email. I'll also send you the death cert

It's well worth getting hold of a copy of the actual enquiry, not just the RCE result.
My grandmother had an uncle who was a windowcleaner in Glasgow and fell from a third-story window in the course of his work. My father and his elder brother were only small boys at the time but they could remember this death being discussed by their parents and, the conclusion being made that he must have been drunk!
However, the Fatal Accident Enquiry brought forth witnesses to say that he had been sober - the lady whose windows he had been cleaning swore he was sober, her 10 years old daughter was in a Swing Park across the street and saw him lose his balance, the police officer who attended the scene reported on his home life (he lived in a "Model") and - best of all from my point of view - his married sister travelled up from the south of England to give evidence. I had been looking for this woman for years, she married in Glasgow and then I lost all trace of her.

Thanks everyone for your help.  I will try to get a copy of the actual inquiry.  Who would that be through and how would I get in touch with them?  I am in Canada so I do not know where to go for this info.

Thanks again for all your help.
