Where buried?
« on: Monday 23 January 12 18:47 GMT (UK) »
My great uncle served on HMS Kent and was killed on the 17th sept 1940 when the ship was torpedoed, on several sites it states that the bodies were taken from the ship at Alexandria where it went for repair. Would the bodies of the men be buried over there or returned to the UK? I can find him mentioned on a memorial in Chatham, Kent and in the town where he originated from but no actual grave. Thanks

If hes on the RN Chatham memorial he has no known grave.
Maybe he was buried at sea after the torpedo attack?

In the Imperial war museum there is apparently photographic footage of the bodies being removed at Alexandria, I have not seen the film but read the transcript on their web site, just cannot find out what they did with the bodies, whether as you say they had a burial at sea or not. Thanks Jasiain

I have had a look on Geoff's Search Engine using the date 17 Sept 1940 and Royal Navy. This gave 34 results, 30 of which were from HMS Kent and all listed on the Chatham Naval Memorial which will mean that they have no grave.
Tried another search up to the 30 Sept !940 incase some died from injuries and found no others.
