Bridget O'ROURKE
« on: Monday 23 January 12 02:18 GMT (UK) »
Taking this name from a death certificate
Mother's maiden name: BRIDGET O'ROURKE

(Of course informant may have got it wrong.)

Trying to locate this person known to have been born Ireland about 1834.

Came from Ireland to Tasmania?
Was she a convict/free settler?
Did she marry? etc.

Can anyone please help?

Yours sincerely, Hyjean

Do you know the name of her husband? - I presume that she had a child with a different surname from the death record.

I have found some records for a Bridget Bourke -- could this be her name?

There was one Bridget Bourke who arrived 6 Dec 1854, aged 20 (this would fit your estimated birth year)

There is also a Bridget Bourke (convict) who arrived 16 Jun 1848 on the 'Kinnear' (from Dublin). She applied to marry John Bentley and then, Daniel Ryan.

I just found a database with a Bridget O'Rourke born 1832 who married John Stokes in Tasmania and had 12 children with him. There are other possibilities if you can provide her husband's name.

Thanks for that so far.
Her known children were:
Elizabeth Cassidy Gertrude Bridget Cassidy, Michael Cassidy and James Cassidy that I know.

Her husband could have been one Michael Cassidy.

Cheers, HyJean

For my part this is a last try.

Yes, I have information on Bridget in her latter years as Bridget O'Connor but still she is elusive before that as Bridget Cassidy and before that as Bridget ?  from Ireland.

I have re-read all the connections given me before and still  have no idea where her children were born-hence Certificate of No Record from Tasmanian BDM.

I am writing a book about all the strands in the family but it seems I will have to stop probing due to lack of available evidence before her marriage to Michael O'Connor.

Spent an afternoon last week at W A Genealogy re-tracing steps but nothing gained.

Thanks to all. Hyjean

I'm having a little trouble putting all the information together...there are a lot of posts!!

Can you give a couple of basics -- what you know, what you want to know -- in one post.

Hyjean have you followed Debra's advice?

Quote
I really think you need to track down baptisms for Bridget's children as this is probably the only way you will find the name of the father.  The church records are held at Tas. Archives and you would probably have to employ a researcher.

Debra is probably correct however two reasons why I can't do this are:-
I am not in the position to employ a researcher for church records and
secondly I live in Western Australia. That is why this is my last attempt.

Condensing for Mel
 I am asking:-
1.)Why is there no birth record for Gertrude Bridget Cassidy?
(Known to have been born in Launceston 1854-1858)
2.)Are there lots of Elizabeth Cassidy's?
(Gertrude's sister was born between 1849-1853. There is one Elizabeth born Campbelltown 1853. Have tracked this extensively. She is daughter of Bridget Cassidy "Australasia" who went on to marry Thomas Brewster. Arrived at span of above dates from indicated age as 47 in Death Cert in 1896 Wyniford River and age at Marriage being 22 in 1875 Launceston to Ah Kin..
3.) Who was their mother? Known as Bridget Cassidy when she married?
(Known she married Michael O'Connor Dec 1874 Launceston 12 Apostles
Died May 1896. Illiterate/laundress/widow-had adult children.)

What is not known is- who was Bridget's previous husband- did she have a legitimate marriage? To whom?Suspect Michael Cassidy. Who was he?   Who was she before that-Bridget ?
How did she come to be in Tasmania? Free settler or convict?

Hope that sets it out..

Cheers,Hyjean
