I am trying to prove a marriage between the Drummond family and the Bowman family in the 1850's scotland. I found two, one in 1850 and another in 1851. Each marriage record has the same names, and the same date (27th sept), also the counties are the same, the only difference is the parish. I don't know which is the correct record or if the same parties had to go through another ceremony for some reason. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi saxman I have a similar thing with my 4xG grandparents in Scotland.It would seem that the marriage was recorded in the parish register of the groom and also that of the bride.

I have not looked up the two entries but these seem to Proclamations i.e desire/intent to marry. He from one parish, she from another. In England you would also see two sets of documentation if banns were published and the couple were from different parishes. Then in England a third document - the marriage certificate.

Hi Barry

In Scotland all you get pre 1855 is the proclamation of the banns which sometimes can be annotated after with a marriage date but this is the exception rather than the rule.

If the bride and groom lived in different parishes then banns would be read in each - hence you will find two records of banns for the same marriage proclamation.

Also it is rare, tho not impossible, for the OPR to record parents names but the norm is just the names of the bride and groom

Unusual for the banns to be called 1 year apart so my money would be on a transcription error.

If any children were born into the 1860s it should mention the parents marriage date/place

I did a parent search on IGI (www.familysearch.org ) and the result below:

Jessie DRUMOND b. 14 April 1853 / chr. 1 May 1853 Saint Vigeans, Angus
 
Isabella DRUMMOND b. 7 Nov. 1851/ chr. 10 Dec. 1851 Arbroath, Angus

They have both marriage dates listed as extracted records as they are exactly 1 year appart I would go for transcription error.
