London Clockmakers
« on: Sunday 22 January 12 15:04 GMT (UK) »
Just discovered one of my ancestors, Thomas DeLasalle, was a clockmaker in London in the 1780's.  Found a clock by him in a Bonhams catalogue and a mention in an Old Bailey trial  ;D

Does anyone know if he would have been a member of a Guild or suchlike? And,  if so, ifthere would be records available?

Thanks

He would fairly certainly have ben a member of the Clockmakers' Company, one of the London Guilds.  Its records, which are extensive, are held in Guildhall Library

Thanks  ;D

Found a document on Ancestry concerning his apprenticeship.  Fascinating. Will check out the Guildhall library next time I go to London.

Also a John De La Salle in London 1828 who seems to have been there earlier (1809-1811).
A watchmaker James Delasalle in London before 1780.
Thomas of London 1799-1824 St. Catherine's Stairs (probably same as St. Catherines Tower Hill).

;D  Thankyou both.  That helps!  Lots of De La Salles and lots with the same forenames, very confusing.
Gradually sorting them out.  (I love a puzzle).
