Devon - STOCKLAND lookup request
« on: Sunday 22 January 12 03:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone has access to baptism registers for Stockland in Devon? I'm trying to find the baptism date and parents' names for a JOHN HALSON who I believe was born at Stockland around 1786. He later (before 1830) married a wife named Margaret and I'd also be very interested to know her maiden name. However I don't know where the couple married. It may have been Stockland or at Wyke (near Axminster) where they subsequently lived.

Many thanks for your time and trouble.

The Devon FHS can provide marriages by surname across all parishes - or you can buy credits to view them on FindMyPast. I would suggest asking for H*LS*N to cover all spelling variants. http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/indexes.htm
Wyke was a tything and as such would have come under Axminster parish, which appears to have been Margaret's home parish. (according to 1851 census born ca 1792)
According to the IGI, the only Margaret baptised in Axminster around that time was Margaret HONEYBOURNE or HONIBUN daughter of Robert & Joanna, baptised 25 Dec 1791.
The 1841 census shows John & Margaret HALSON with children Hannah & Sarah and a Robert HONEBON aged 20.
