Hamilton McMillan died County Down 22 May 1828
« on: Saturday 21 January 12 07:25 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to ascertain the truth or not of a family story regarding my 4th Great Grandfather Hamilton McMillan born abt 1776 possibly in Scotland.

The family was of the North Ireland Protestants who had fled Scotland to Ireland.

What the family story says that Hamilton, was a member of the Orange Lodge and was beaten to death one night by Catholics on his way home from Lodge. This would have been on or about 22 May 1828.

Is there anyway this story can be varified ie are there any Newspapers or other ways this can be checked.

There is a photo of his Wife's Tombstone on the Co. Down Memorials : Gravestone Page. Jane McMillan died 15 March 1826.

Any Informaqtion I receive as a result of this post will be gratefully received.

Regards

Alan

Belfast Central Library has copies of old newspapers including the Newsletter which goes back to the 1700s. You might find some mention of the event there.

I appreciate that but you might want to get a researcher to look it up for you, or perhaps if you are lucky someone might volunteer for you.

Yes I believe Hamilton died in Greyabbey on 22 May 1828. His wife was buried in Greyabbey on the 15 March 1826. Part of her Tombstone In scription reads

Nathanial McMillan of Ballybrain in memory of his mother Jane McMillan who departed this life 15th March 1826 aged 42 years. Also his father Hamilton McMillan who departed this life 22nd May 1828.

I will check out the sites that have been sent for further information or see if it aggrees with my data, which has been gathered by various McMillan and McCance researchers.
