Kerr ( Carr) family of Crosscanonby
« on: Friday 20 January 12 16:30 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the family of Robert Kerr and Nancy Porteous who married in Crosscanonby in 1796 and had a number of children most of them in Crosscanonby, they were

James b. 4/6/1797 Crosscanonby

Martha b. 23/12/1798

Jane b. 28/12/1800

John b. 30/3/1804

Ealinor b. 13/8/1809

William b. 20/1/1806

Rachel b.17/1/1813

Martha married Henry Hesket in 1817 Crosscanonby and had a number of children

but I have not been able to trace any one else, it is especially difficult not knowing the area in the 1841 census Isee that Ealinor is livin with her sister Martha.

Can anyone help please thanking you stoop.

Hi,
Is this the Crosscanonby Near Maryport in Cumbria?
If so have you any Surnames of the people the children may have  married?

Hi lizdb, thanks for your information about William I look at the census for 61 and 71 and try to identify his wife and any children he may have had.

Thanks to you tibia as yet I do not have any surnames, but yes it is the Crosscanonby that is near Maryport.

Thanks stoop.

There was a William Carr married an Agnes McKensie in Crosscanonby in 1856.
Also I found Martha and Henry Hesket living in Allerby with their seven children, in the 1841 census. Allerby is about 1 mile away from my house and Crosscanonby is probably 3 miles away.

Thank you very much Carol, it could be that it was my William that you are referring to. Can you tell me how many churches there are in the area around Crosscanonby where my ancestors might be buried ? Do you know if I could get hold of m.i.s for likely churches. Regards stoop.

There is a lovely church in Crosscanonby, one in Hayton which is about 4/5 miles away, also a couple in Dearham which is not too far away, not sure about records possibly in archives at Whitehaven. If you have any ancestors buried at Crosscanonby I would be more than happy to take some photo's for you.

On family search I have found a Robert Carr buried at Crosscannonby 11th oct 1834 and a Nancy Carr buried 28th aug 1836, possibilities?
Also on family search it lists baptisms of the children you listed plus a Sarah but the parents of some of them are Robert and Nancy and others are down as being children of Robert and Ann. Is Ann & Nancy the same person?
I also found a William Carr baptised 18th may 1834, only mother listed as Eleanor, and a Robert Carr was born with only mother listed as Sarah on 15th april 1832, both at Crosscannonby.

Hi Carol, excellent news, I am confident that it is Robert and the Nancy I have been seeking. I have ordered a m.i. booklet of Crosscanonby and trust that the references will confirm their identity. The information you have given me looks most promising. I would appreciate photoraphs of Crosscanonby church and relevant gravestones. Thanks again Carol. stoop.
