I look forward to receiving what you have about  Abraham Savil(le) and family I can't be 100 % sure he is one of my direct ancestors but I have an Abraham Savile who married a Martha Gledhill in Bradford in 1730.The Savils I have traced lived in Thornton not too far from Halifax but a fair way from Saddleworth in pre-M62 days!!.

Saddleworth is still in the West Riding of Yorkshire.  The administrative changes of '74 had no impact on the status of the Ridings.

Saddleworth is now, and has been since 1974 part of the metropolitan borough of Oldham.
It is oldham council that is wanting to stop the Whit Friday band contest (Google it) as it takes up a lot of the councils resources, closing roads and policing and marshalling the events in the different vilages.
There was talk in 2004 of Saddleworth going back to West Yorkshire but nothing came of it.

I am aware that Saddleworth is administered by OMBC and has been since 1974.  53% of Oldham remains in Yorkshire and 47% is in the Lancashire Palatine.
As many do,  you are confusing the administrative areas with the true counties.  Check the government statement rather than stuff like Wikepaedia, or better still come and celebrate Yorkshire Day in Uppermill on Sunday the 29th of July 2012.  Oldham MBC will be flying the Yorkshire flag in the week up to the 1st of August.

i was in Diggle last week for the contest and the biggest talking point was Oldham MBC pulling out of the event.

I hope you enjoyed the Diggle Band contests, although I would have thought you would have commented on all the new signs installed by OMBC with the various Saddleworth villages sporting the white rose of Yorkshire.  The administrative area called Oldham covers two contigious counties.  Most unitary authorities adopted names like Calderdale, Tameside and Kirklees, but Oldham chose the name of one of their towns.  On Yorkshire Day please come to the Saddleworth White Rose Society stand and we will give you some literature.
