Olivers in India
« on: Thursday 19 January 12 11:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for some information about my grandfather. He was born Fredrick George Oliver, his father was Ernest St Clair Oliver and Mother was Ida Letitia Oliver (dont know maiden name).

His birth date is 26 Dec 1910 in Madras. He married Blanche (or Blossom) Shadwell and they had three children. Joy (my mother), Anne and Jim. They were born in Simla.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Sue

Hi Sue,

Welcome to RootsChat!

Just done a quick search on FamilySearch - https://www.familysearch.org/ - for any details on Ernest's marriage to Ida. Her maiden name was Wayne and they married in Vepery, Madras on the 14 Dec 1908.
Ida's father was Thomas Cordell Wayne and Ernest's father is shown as  George Iweedale(?)Oliver.

Other info - groom's name: Ernest St.Clair Oliver
groom's birth date: 1882
groom's age: 26
bride's name: Ida Laetitia Wayne
bride's birth date: 1883
brides age: 25

Hope that helps

Thanks guys, that gives me something to work with. I would like to find out about my grandmothers side but the Shadwells in India are very common it seems.

Hi Sue,
I came across the following record and wondered if it was pertinent regarding your search for the Shadwells. Is it possible that Blanche decided to use one of her middle names rather than her first name? Dates would fit for her age at marriage to Frederick.

parents: William Earle Shadwell, Blanche Adelaide

name: May Olivia Blanche Shadwell
gender: Female
baptism/christening date: 05 Apr 1883
baptism/christening place: Agra, Bengal, India
birth date: 02 Jan 1883
race: White
father's name: William Earle Shadwell
mother's name: Blanche Adelaide

If the above fits then there is further info for her parents:-

 parents: Henry Shadwell
spouse: Blanche Adelaide Fritschy

groom's name: William Earl Shadwell
groom's birth date: 1850
groom's age: 31
bride's name: Blanche Adelaide Fritschy
bride's birth date: 1855
bride's age: 26
marriage date: 15 Mar 1881
marriage place: Agmere, Bengal, India
groom's father's name: Henry Shadwell
bride's father's name: Henry George Hampton
groom's marital status: Single
bride's marital status: Widowed

Hi Sue,

I too am searching the Shadwell FT. Blanche had four half-siblings. Their mother was my husband's grandmother: Ellen Shadwell. I know the names of the four children, but little else about them. Do you know anything?

Hi Lorna

Grandma (Blanche) we remember as having two brothers. Both died in the war. We do have pictures of them but we dont remember a fourth child. Can you tell me the names of the four children and i will check with my mum (Joy).

My uncle has found out the ancestry of both of my grandparents (his parents) so i might be able to get some more information from him.

Hi Sue,

Walter William Woodhouse Shadwell married twice as far as I can tell. His second wife, Ellen Elizabeth had four children with him: Austin, Yvonne, Cyril and Mervyn. Ellen is my husband's grandmother. Walter was 44 when she married him; she only 18. She went on to have a further six children after she and Walter divorced (one of whom is my husband's father). It is the four children Ellen had with Walter that I am trying to trace information about. I know is alive and living in America.

Any information you have would be welcome. Thank you,
Lorna
