i am looking for the parents of James muir born 20 Oct 1822 Paisley Renfrewshire Scotland he married a ann harrison she was born 1832 in England, they married 26 march 1850 Independent Chaple Brisbane street Hobart Tasmania.

james arrived per the isabella to tasmania (VDL)

hi nellie, trying to help, on the 1841 census i have three james muir's living in paisley born 1821!!!!

james on his own- 36 Wellmeadow Street
James living with farmer- netherton
James with parents Agnes and Thomas(big family) Lonehead

any ideas?

There are 2 submitted records on the IGI for your James -
Middle Paisley, Renfrew - parents Matthew Muir and Margaret Stevenson.

Have you looked on ScotlandsPeople (pay to view) for a birth/baptism record.

You can search for free but have to pay to check the finding.

Searching for a James Muir 1822/23 in Middle Paisley, gives 1 match - but the record does not appear if I specify father mat*  or mother margaret

Edit: There are 4 children born to Mat* and Margaret Muir 1824-1829 in Middle Paisley and 1 marriage between Mathew Muir and Margaret  1821 - but it doesn't appear to be Stevenson?

Hi Nellie

I have a family of Millers from Renfrew (mother was a Muir - which added interest to your post). Every child except the FIRST in my Miller family had a baptism record. I spent a fortune on SP looking for her - this one looks very similar - someone seems to have decided James belongs to this family - it fits with the marriage - but all the other baptisms are on the IGI - as were mine.

If the record is not on SP - and he came to oz before 1841 (as did my Miller lass), there are not many other places to look.

This chap is causing more grief than i can poke a stick at.


Not only am i having trouble with him but my 5th great grandfather who was transported from England in 1834 trying to find his parents are just the same as James Muir. Needle in a hay stack.

Hi Nellie

There are many Muirs in Renfrew  at that time - I do have a Matthew who is a brother to my Elizabeth who came here in 1833 - He was born 1792 & could be the matthew on the IGI. I have downloaded quite alot from SP as looking for my Mary Miller, I began to wonder if she was born before her parents married - but I have never found her. There may be a connection as they were all in Paisley at about the same time.

Tracking convicts in Australia is relatively easy - but it seems difficult to find them back in UK - they were probably disowned by family. We have a first fleeter - almost impossible to prove his UK family - although many have tried.

I can pass on all the Muir information I have, if you are interested

I have found that my first Australian generation followed the Scottish naming patterns exactly - so this may help you to find your man.
