Hi,

Did Lydia's mother Elizabeth go to America with her? I ask because I found this (badly written) entry on a ship list, transcribed as CEANEN but I think it could easily be CRAVEN.

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Ship Name: England
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland
Port of Arrival: New York
Arrival Date: 23 Jun 1875

Elizth CEANEN    60    F    Wife
Lydia       "        26    "    Daughter

I also found,

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Ship Name: Abyssinia
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Port of Arrival: New York, United States
Arrival Date: 22 Apr 1872
Matthew Hy MUTTER    21    Male    Labourer

Do you think this could be them?

Regards,
Daisy

Hi Daisy, I don't know the answer to the first question. The father, Samson Craven died in Halifax 21 Feb 1875. I have a guesstimate birth year for Elizabeth as 1814 and that would put her age at approx 60 for 1875.
So far have not been able to find a death fro Elizabeth Craven in UK that lines up. I think someone on Ancestry had her death as 1989 but no proof to verify it.

Lydia's brother Benjamin went to America in 1861, ship unknown, facts from his naturalisation paper. He died 29 Oct 1911 Methuen, Essex, Mass.

Her sister Martha Ann and brother Joseph are unknowns. The other brother Josiah stayed in Halifax, married Fanny Hemingway and died in Halifax 1987.

I will see if I can locate that shipping list for the details.

Regarding Matthew Nutter, he gave his occupation as a farm labourer on the NBOYNTON voyage from NY to Sydney.
He was a carpet printer in the 1871 UK census. So there is a possibility he could be the man I am seeking. Most of the family were associated with the weaving industry. Matthew was a builder in NSW Australia.

Will have to see if I can find that list as well. But it does not solve what his mother Marry NUTTER and sister Hannah BENN did about travelling to America.

I am most grateful for your assistance.

regards, fred ..

As Benjamin went to Lawrence Mass. I think it's a very good possibility that this could be Martha Ann's marriage, and later life there.

Martha Ann CRAVEN    Dec Q 1862    Halifax    9a  672
others on same page;
John BARKER
Mary THORP
Joseph WAINWRIGHT

1871  RG10/4479  f.6  p.24  Horton, Yorkshire
90 Adelaide St

John BARKER       Head    32    Clerk in Worsted Mill    Yorkshire Keldwick
Martha Ann  "      Wife    29                                          "      Halifax
Fred         "         Son     6    Scholar                             "      Bradford
Mary        "         Daur    4    Scholar                             "      Bradford

I haven't found them on a passenger list yet but this looks like the family in Lawrence Mass.

1880 US census,  Lawrence, Essex, Massachusetts
BARKER
John         42    Overseer Woollen Mill
Martha A.  39    Housekeeping
Frederick   15    At School
Mary         14   At School
Edgar         9    At School
Annie         6    At School
Arthur        3
BRAITHWAITE Edwin  27  Boarder  Married  Works Woollen Mill

All born England, all parents born England.

I can see John and Martha in Lawrence Mass. up to 1920 (except 1890).

I think getting the marriage cert. might be the only way to check this is the right marriage unless someone can find it in parish records.

From the 1841 census I see there are more siblings, Moses b.1835 and Edgar b.1839. I expect you already know about them but just in case, I found their burials,

Burials
Halifax  Chapelry of Coley St John
Moses CRAVEN
Abode:  Northowram
02 Sep 1849
Age: 14

Halifax  Chapelry of Coley St John
Edgar CRAVEN
Abode:  Northowram
28 May 1850
Age: 14

Hi Daisy, many thanks for that information. Been away a bit lately so will have to stay home and follow up all this good information you have found. I had the 2 boys on the 1941 census but not their burials.
regards fred ..
