CRAVEN from Northowram, UK
« on: Monday 16 January 12 22:43 GMT (UK) »
I have a Lydia CRAVEN who was born at Northowram 7 Oct 1846, approx 3 Km NE of Halifax UK the 4th of 5 children of Samson Craven and Elizabeth Cheetham. The father was a wool sorter, nothing is known of her mother. Lydia married Mathew NUTTER in Boston and later came to Australia in 1877 on NBOYNTON. How they travelled to America is a mystery. In UK 1871 census they appear to have been neighbours in Crossley Terrace Halifax.

It's not really clear what it is you are asking for help with

Matthew Henry Nutter was the son of George (occ mechanic)  and Mary & was born 29.8.1850 and baptised 6.7.1851 at St John The Baptist Halifax

Thank you Carol for the reply. I am seeking how Lydia CRAVEN, Matthew Henry NUTTER, Mary NUTTER and Hannah BEAN/BENN went to America. I have been able to locate both families in the UK census.
the information about Matthew's father surname is also unknown as his  mother's maiden name was NUTTER.

This doesn't help with your search for their passage to US, but there is a lovely headstone to Lydia, Mary and Matthew Henry Nutter and the picture and details are on the Australian Cemeteries website

(just in case you don't have it)

Thank you Ros, it is a great cemetery with a couple of books published about it. Unfortunately it has been the subject of vandal attacks in the past which has required a lot of work to be done to repair and re-stand headstones. The "Friends of Mays Hill" is a very active group.

What a shame about the vandalism.

By the way there is a public tree on ancestry which has that Matthew Henry Nutter is the son of Mary Blackburn and John Blackburn and gives as a source the 1871 census where MHN is stated to be the son of John and Mary Blackburn and living in Halifax with them and some Blackburn children.  MHN is a (control?) printer.

This still doesn't help with their passage to USA but if it is not your tree then it maybe worth contacting them to compare info

That is a confusing census sheet. I have deduced Mary his mother is living with Blackburn (despite a claim of marriage) and Mathew is shown as a son but is hers, hence he is on the bottom of the list. I have never found a marriage for Mary Nutter and she had 2 children to 2 different fathers. It happened. I don't subscribe to Ancestry and in the past when trying to contact people have not been successful. Grist for the mill as the experts say!

RG9; Piece: 3254; Folio: 67; Page: 20
John Blackburn   39
Mary Ann Blackburn   37
Joseph Blackburn   12
Mary Blackburn   10
Elizabeth Blackburn   7
Harriet Blackburn   4
Saml Blackburn   3

in 1871 MHN's relationship is servant. (& he's a Carpet printer)
RG10/4395; Folio: 81; Page: 13

And you can see he's not with the Blackburn family in 1861.
