Leeds Castle Census Returns
« on: Monday 16 January 12 12:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi Kent Researchers,

Has anyone managed to arrive at Leeds Castle when searching through the Census.
My grandfather was possibly employed at the castle as a groom around 1911-1914.
His name was Harry Edgar Sheppard.  Sadly he died in France in 1915.
I've had a look at the 1901 and 1911 Census but can't seem to find where the Castle records are listed.
Does anyone know if the castle staff lived in, or perhaps lodged in surrounding villages.
Any help much appreciated.

1911 has a lot of references to "Seeds" Castle?! ;D

But the reference is RG14, Piece 4178, RD 52, SD 3, ED 1, SN 2

Where was he born and what year so we can help narrow down the search as lots of Harry's are listed without a middle name or initial in the census?

Of the three H SHEPPARD soldiers who died in 1915 one was Harry SHEPPARD born Greenwich, residing in Snodland when enlisted at New Cross.  Died France and Flanders 22 Dec 1915 a private in the 7th btn West Kent regiment G/2349.  An army service document gives his father as Arthur SHEPPARD and wife as Rose SPENCER (married Southborough Kent 10 Jul 1915).  Children Henry Lewis SPENCER born 5 May 1914 Forest Gate and William Arthur (deceased) born 1 Jan 1916 Malling.

Any good?

Casalguidi :)

Hi All,

Thanks very much for your help, I managed to get to Leeds Castle without a satnav!.

The Harry Edgar Sheppard I was looking for was born in July 1892 and is the one mentioned by Casalguidi.  I have his army details medals and service record.  I purchased the records in 1996 when they first were available but did not know he was living in Snodland at the time, as he enlisted at New Cross near his home in Greenwich in September 1914.  I only received a couple of typewritten sheets for my £25.00 but it did give me his main details.    The story goes that he was working at Leeds Castle as a groom when he met Rose Spencer who was thought to be a servant there. I was hoping this might have been around 1911 but it seems it might have been later.

Thanks again for all the interest.

Regards
