Harper or Harpur
« on: Monday 16 January 12 10:30 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am hoping to find information on my Great Granmother's family.  My G,Grandmother was Mary Harper possibly born in Kilkenny in abt 1867.  She married Robert Thompson, (1856 - 1945) who served in the Royal navy.  Robert Thompson was born in Co Carlow and was adopted and raised in Greystones.  His birth parents Alexander and Anne Thompson didn not raise him.

I have records of her from the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses, and family lore says that her family was from Kilkenny.

Many thanks,

Trevor
Fisher, Tyrie, Nash, Carden, Scott and Trant on my fathers side
Paine, Thompson, Orme, Harper and Bolton on my Mother's
Also interested in links to other Quaker connections, such as Beale, Shackleton, Rowntree, Grubb, Unthank, Boardman and Abell

probably the place to start would be with the marriage of Mary and Robert - or do you already have that ?

Can you post the census links ... it helps the search if we have all the details

1911 census is

I dont have any records of the marriage of Mary and Robert, unfortunately.  I am new to all of this so it is probably starting me in the face somewhere!!

Many thanks!

thanks - beside the years married, there's often clues in the other details - e.g. places of birth for children etc

The couple are married 17 years, so c1894. And the children are born Dublin City and Co. Kilkenny

see :  Introduction to Irish Records
My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?

It's an interesting address the family have in 1911 - right next door to the old parliament building - now the Bank of Ireland. Most of those buildings were offices for solicitors, insurance companies etc.

A Robert Thompson is listed in Thom's directory of 1914 at number 3, as caretaker. So maybe a part time job for him ?

A possible marriage for Robert and Mary in Kilkenny district, which is based in the city but also covers surrounding areas.

  name: Robert Thompson
  registration district:   Kilkenny
  Event type: Marriage
  Quarter and year: Jul-Sep 1893
  Volume: 3 / Page: 331

  Name: Mary Harper
  [same index references as Robert]

The marriage record should show Mary's father's details (name and occupation) and also Mary's place of residence at the time of marriage which may give clues to verify, or rule out, any possible births certs for her.

There are a number of registration districts which cover Co. Kilkenny. There is a possible birth around the right time on the BMD Index, again in Kilkenny city registration district, of a Mary Eliza Harpur... dont know if the middle name rings any bells..

  Name: Mary Eliza Harper
  Registration district:   Kilkenny
  Event type: Birth
  Year: 1867
  Volume: 13 / Page: 539
