191 Brompton Road, London - Amble, Northumberland?COMPLETED WITH THANKS
« on: Saturday 14 January 12 12:29 GMT (UK) »
I have recently received a copy of a family photograph. Unfortunately I have not been sent a copy of the back of the photo which I know is how you make your brilliant identifications.

The query I have is that the people in the photograph all lived in Amble, Northumberland, but the back of the photograph  apparantly has the information 191 Brompton Road, London with Artists and Photographers being written on the back.

As far as I can make out, it seems unlikely (although not impossible) that my relatives would have been in London having their photos taken.

Do you know if this company from 191 Brompton Road London had other branches, or indeed if they travelled around with mobile studios at all?

I have put on a scan of the photo, but as explained this is all I have - no extra identifying information.

I wonder also if anyone could date the photo for me? The man bottom left was born in 1877 if this helps.

Many thanks

I've just googled the address, plus the word photographer, and the results seem to suggest Searle Brothers for the name of the firm.

Hi

Following on from Whipby:

Quote

Searle Bros.
= Charles & Archibald Stuart.
STUDIO: 191 Brompton Road, Knightsbridge, Kensington 1881 - 1930.
The Stuart brothers ran the firm after World War I.
The 1901 electoral list gives the occupant as William John Stuart.
Partnership dissolved July 21 1921.

They look as if they're dressed for a special occasion. Not very good with men's clothing but I'd say the first decade of 20C (high collars of men in front row)

Have to agree they do look Edwardian but probably no later than about 1905.The white ties indicate a formal occasion usually a wedding but in this there is an absence of corsages which I would expect to see.
At least 3 are related as indicated by the informal pose with hand on shoulder but it's quite possible they all are.

Thanks! Very interesting about being related - I know that two of the men are - but I don't know who the third one is - more questions for me!!

Regards the year,  the man on the front left was married in 1904, but I don't think this looks like his wedding.

Thank you for the information. I have searched for Searle Brothers, but the only reference was from SW London - maybe this photograph really was taken in London and my relative did travel there from Northumberland!

Have you looked to see whether one of them may have married a London lass? Perhaps they went down there to have a wedding with her family then returned to Amble to live near his folks.
