Need help finding Dublin City Street Directories
« on: Saturday 14 January 12 08:37 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for any year betwen 1800 and 1825. I'm particularly looking for residents of Cook Street.

The early directories that I know of dont have street listings - just alphabetical by surname, or by trade in some cases.

The earliest directory I have with a street listing is Pettigrew and Oulton 1834.

I have the 'Treble Almanack' from 1822 which lists 'Nobility, Merchants and Traders'.
If you have a name, I will look it up.

Do you know an occupation for your John Ward ?

Not everyone is included in directories - just people with certain trades and businesses, along with gentry & clergy etc

would this John Ward be the same as the one listed on the Ireland - Austalia transportation database ?

  Name : John Ward
Place of Imprisonment:  Hulk "Surprise" Cork
  Document date: 19/12/1824
  Sentence: Transportation
  Document reference: PPC 2501
Notes : Letter from the convict to his
father, John, c/o James Armstrong, 45 Cook Street,
Dublin, asking him to petition for mitigation
    of his sentence to confinement.

The details in that records suggest that the Cook Street address is that of Mr.  James Armstrong rather than for John Ward snr. One of the other entries on the database mentions that John snr's occupation is labourer.

Someone else was on here searching for this John Ward a while ago - I'll try to locate the post.

A copy of the Transportation database can be searched on the National Archives website : here

Pigot's Directory 1824, lists James Armstrong as the principle occupant of the Cook Street address in the listings for Vintners, Spirit Dealer, Porter and Punch Houses :

  Jas. Armstrong, 45 Cook-street

here's the older thread I mentioned :

How to find info from the early 1800s/John Ward

No sign of a John Ward in the Treble Almanack, sorry.
