FRANCE, Dunkirk (Gregor or Gregoire - Renwood)
« on: Friday 13 January 12 17:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone

I'm not sure if i've put this post in the right place (let's hope).  I'm looking for information on my 5 x great grandfather Augustus Henry Gregor and his parents.  Can anyone tell me when and where was born.  All i've got is Dunkirk, France.  In 1811 on his marriage record in Scotland it says he was a French prisioner of war and also on the birth record of his first born son Walter.  I found his death record in 1863 (aged 75) and it say is father was (first name unknown) - Gregor and is Mother was Mary Gregor M.S. Renwood.  These 2 names don't sound very french to me and i wondered 1. Where they came from, 2. How they ended up in France, 3. Did they stay in France or did they move to somewhere in the UK.??????

Any information is greatly appreciated.  My e-mail address is *

Thanks

It is likely, if he was indeed a French prisoner of war, that his name was originally Gregoire and his mother's name something else (maybe Renaud or similar?). The information on his death certificate presumably came from his wife or one of his children, none of whom

There may be some record of him as a prisoner of war at the NA, but apparently there's no one single index to these records:

Nord archives (inc. Dunkerque) are online.

There are parish records for the time you're looking for but they're not consistently indexed that I can see (some years seem to have a index at the start or end).

Auguste Gregoire was my 3x Great Grandfather so we must be distantly related. Am connected to him via my mother who was a Gregor, only child of Augustus Henry Gregor a copperplate printer in Edinburgh, 1880-1950 ;a son of William Wood Gregor 1848-1917, son of Walter Gregor. Like you am also looking for Gregoire/Renwood connections in Dunkirk. Would love you to contact me to compare notes and family trees. Have found article by Ian MacDougall in Midlothian Advertiser dated Oct.2008 where he mentions Auguste as being a ship's cabin boy. He has written 2 books on French prisoners of War in Scotland - both available on Amazon detailing various camps. Apparently Auguste was sent to an officers depot in Peebles.
