Any information on this family would be very useful. I'm trying to find information on my family during the War of Independence for my Leaving Cert. Research Topic for history. Information on James Fitzgerald and Leo Patrick Fitzgerald would be particularly useful.

Here's what I do know:
James Fitzgerald
  • Was involved in 1916 Rising and was in Bolands Mill.
  • Married Kathleen Geraghty in 1917/18 or thereabouts.
    • May have been a pallbearer at Michael Collins's funeral, but I can't be sure; that's just what my dad told me.
    • Was Lt. Col. James Fitzgerald of 3 Battalion of the IRA in Dublin.
    Leo Fitzgerald
    • Was also in IRA and in Bolands Mill in 1916.
    • Was shot in 1921 by Black and Tans on Greater Brunswick street. This event has been mentioned by Sean MacBride.

I'm afraid that's all I know. If anyone could find anything out about Kathleen Geraghty and her family that would be great as well.

    Census for Fitzgerald family:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Trinity/Brunswick_St__Great__Part_/1309738/

Census for Geraghty family: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Usher_s_Quay/Bow_Bridge/73996/

That's everything I know. hanks so much to anyone who finds anything in advance.

Good luck with the project!

EDIT The Fitzgeralds are listed in 1911 as Gaelige: Mac Gairailt
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0jpg/

The following are references for marriage and birth records of the Fitzgeralds; you will see that St. Andrew's church has not imaged their books yet so they are transciptions giving various spellings of names, especially Lucinda and her maiden name Doolin but look correct.

If you are Dublin based you could go into the National Library to look at a micro film of the original; if you are lucky their marriage details may be recorded on their baptismal record.

The civil record of Leo's birth is Dublin South Jan-Mar 1893 Volume 2 Page 698; you could order a copy of this record and it would state his father's occupation if you needed to know it.

From the private collection of Vincent Byrne, E company 2nd Battalion Old IRA in the Military Archives; your ancestors memorial card bearing his photograph
http://www.militaria-archive.com/independence/vb-scrapb2/content/Vincent_Byrne_Scrapbook_221_large.html

from Turtle Bunbury's website
"Leo Fitzgerald House – Named for a decorator’s son from Great Brunswick Street (now Pearse Street) who joined the 3rd Battalion of the IRA. In March 1921, Fitzgerald, his brother-in-law [later General] Seán MacMahon, Seán MacBride and others ambushed a Black and Tan convoy on Sandwith Street. When the Tans returned fire, Fitzgerald was hit and died on the steps of Pearse Street Library."

I will think of him when I am next in the library researching

editted to add:
Just been told by a friend that there is a plaque naming Leo outside the library as it now incorporates what was the Fitzgerald home. His brother Billy (William) the youngest was also an active republican.

Civil record for marriage of James FITZGERALD and Kathleen GERAGHTY is
Dublin South 1921 Jul-Sep Vol 2 Page 738

If you have the time to wait you could apply to the Dept of Defence for James and Kathleen's pension records; if they applied whether granted or not, they have copies of all the applications in which people described their military service during 1916, the war of independence and the civil war.

Thank you very much! This is going to make for a very interesting project =)

I think the only one who wasn't involved in the War of Independence must have been William, since he would have only been 5 in 1916. And perhaps Theobald.

Thanks again, this is a great help  :)

Thomas is listed at no. 173 in Thom's 1906 and also in 1914 as follows :

173 Brunswick Street, Great

  T.J. Fitzgerald, decorator
  T. Grogan confectioner.

Number 173 was located on the south of the street near the junction with Westland Row.

By 1921 the listing for #173 has changed to :

     T.J. Fitzgerald, decorator
     Miss Sheila Fitzgerald, confectioner

Kathleen's family do not seem to have baptism's recorded on IrishGenealogy as yet

However Austin and George Geraghty are unusual enough names to work with
The civil record of their births seem to be:
Joseph Austin GERAGHTY Dublin South Jan-Mar 1900 V2 P615
George GERAGHTY Dublin South Jul-Sep 1903 V2 P597
Margaret's maiden name should be given on these certificates. This could help locate Kathleen's birth certificate.

Patrick and Margaret state they were born in Co. Mayo. There are several civil districts in Co. Mayo but very few Patrick Geraghty marriages in the 1880s. There is a match between
Pat GERAGHTY and Margaret MULGREW in Westport Jan-Mar 1883 V4 Page 383
If Mulgrew was the maiden name on the birth certificate this is most likely your ancestor; other wise you'll have to start to search again!

Best of luck hope this helps a little
