ROBINSON-MASSEY- Chesire, Lancashire
« on: Friday 13 January 12 03:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I am trying to find some information on a Samuel Robinson and Hannah Massey.

Both were born around 1816 in Lancashire, England. Possibly around manchester.

They were married on the 28 May 1838 in cheadle, Chesire. I have no idea who their parents are.

I currently only know of one daughter, Sarah Ann Robinson born around 1860 in Woodhouse Eaves, Derbyshire (now leicestershire?).  I however can not find a birth record on ancestry.com that matches enough to chance ordering the correct one, nor have i been able to find a baptism record.

Any help would be much appreciated! :)

Melissa

Melissa - the marriage certificate would identify their fathers, so I'd suggest obtaining that. You can either do it from the GRO or from the local register office. Details for the latter via
http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/cgi/marrind.cgi

These registers (on film) may also be found at some local archives (without checking Cheshire RO, Manchester City Library & Stockport Local Studies are all possibles) which would be free if you're able to visit.

As regards the daughter's birth, in the early days of civil registration (started July 1837) some births weren't registered - it has been estimated as 5-10% so she may be one of these. The birth does seem rather late in relation to the marriage if she's an "only" - have you traced the couple through on the censuses?

Hi,

Thank you for the reply.

I thought i would have to obtain their marriage certificate- I was just hopeful that someone out there might be related and know the answer already. Also as I live in Australia, ordered certificates can take a while to get here, so i've been compiling a list of certificates I need, to than order them all at once- something that ends up being quite expensive.

I did think the same thing, that she seemed a bit late for the marriage. I have found only one possible match for this family in 1871 living in All Souls, Lancashire. It lists a Hannah Robinson (born abt 1816) as a widow living with Sarah Ann aged 12 and a Betty Robinson (listed as daughter born abt 1853 in Manchester). I believe this is them.
In the 1881 census Sarah Ann has left home and is now married and living with her husband.

I see your point about the certs, but unless you're lucky I think this one of those cases as this register isn't online as far as I can see at the moment.

I've identified the 1871 census you found & from that have found the "Robbison" family (with more daughters) in 1861 ref 2946 143 39 & following page. Sarah listed as born Manchester on this, which also includes Samuel's mother. There are three possible birth registrations in 1859 that match under Chorlton registration district, which covered parts of Manchester at the time. LancashireBMD has two of these in the Hulme sub-district & one in Ardwick - none list mother's maiden name.

I've not tried to find them in 1841 or 1851, but I'd hope the extra children should make it a bit easier! It does look as though the Derbyshire place of birth is incorrect if the other data matches.
