Hi
No I had not done any research on Thomas Humfrey Welsby's naval service.
He sounds like a bit of a hero,I shall certainly keep looking.
Thank you.
Humfrey

Hello HUmfrey,
The Welsby jigsaw is progressing and I can advise you that there are entries on the Freemen of Chester database as follows:
Henry Welsby. Occupation: Liquor Merchant. Abode: Chester. Made Free: 13 July 1813. Made Free by Apprenticeship.
Walter Welsby. Abode: 14 Nicholas Street, Chester. Occupation: Wine Merchant. Made Free 1 January 1880. Made Free by birth.
Nicholas Street stands in Chester to this day.
This database is searchable online and is on the Cheshire Record Office site.
Jo.

Hello Humfrey,
I lived in Chester for years and moved away quite recently. I am sure I recall a shop by the name of Welsby in Chester in relatively recent years. I think it was in Watergate St.
The Chester Heritage and History Centre on Bridge St Row might have some information on the Welsby family and businesses in Chester.

Hello Jo,
The shop was at 40 Bridge street, I believe that is on the Rows, but closed down in 1970 ,did you ever go in?

Hi again Humfrey,
There are at least 3 trees on ancestry where people are researching the same family. Thomas 1813 died at Southport in 1882 and probate was granted to Walter Welsby, wine & spirit merchant of Chester, and Charles Welsby, barrister at law, of Southport. He left £9225 2s 6d.
Have a look here to see how much that is compared to today:
