Hi Bilcor1

There is this 1901 entry in the census transcript - you would need to double check the original as likely errors show on the transcript:

John Buchan 28, fisherman b. St Combs, Aberdeenshire
Agnes Buchan 9 (age is wrong), wife b. Carmbulg (?spl Cairnbulg), Aberdeenshire
Mary Hay Buchan 4 daughter b. Peterhead
Ellen Buchan 4 daughter b. Peterhead
Ellen Buchan 50, aunt, netmaker b. Peterhead
Ellen Noble 9 visitor b. Peterhead

Address: 18 Gladstone Rd, Peterhead

What is the occupation of John's father on his 1930 marriage? Have you tried find young John's entry on the 1911 census entry?

There is a marriage showing for a John Buchan and Agnes (not Strachan) in 1894 in Peterhead. Sometimes errors are made on marriage or death certs and you need to look elswhere for information. Like you, couldn't see a marriage with the bride as Strachan.

Hard to guess at Agnes' maiden name if the surname Strachan has gone down in error. Normally a check of the death cert for the person you are researching can help. Given the birth year, likely this date will be past the year that you can view images on line and would need to be ordered or viewed at one of the main centres/registrar's offices. Also, keep at the back of your mind that Agnes and Ann (and Nancy) are common first name variants.

The closest so far that I can see was that 1894 marriage that I mentioned earlier  :-\

Ok, understand now! Agnes from the 1894 marriage entry was also Buchan for surname. See that now from SP. So the Strachan surname was for the maternal grandmother.

You could look at the children's birth certs from that 1901 census entry and reconfirm details to make sure that the entry you have found is the correct one for 1901. This will also help you for finding the correct 1911 entry (you can use the second name option on SP for searches).

Billy, was Helen Buchan the constant witness to siblings' weddings  ::)

I have found an online A/try tree for one of the sisters, showing on that 1901 census entry I posted earlier.

Parents showing as you said, John B and Agnes B. Mary Hay Buchan married a John Drummond Ritichie in 1919 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church (what church did John Jnr marry at?). Mary Hay Buchan, 22, fishworker and living at 11 (?) Gladstone Road. Parents John and Agnes, witness Helen Buchan.

Also, this would be Agnes Buchan before her marriage:

Helen Strachan 74
Helen Buchan 49, daughter, fishworker b. Peterhead
Agnes Buchan 19, Grand Daur b. Rathen
Thomas Buchan 18
Agnes Noble 8
John Mair 17

Address: 23 Ronheads, Peterhead
