The extra details you gave can help people narrow down the correct Walsh family when checking up on possible connections for people involved in 1916, War of Independence etc.

I've seen mention of an Edward Walsh in 1916 articles, but believe this Edward died in the GPO.

Hi Shane

He was born on Spike Island in Cork on 31st December 1899,
His father Nicholas Walsh was in the Army and we know that Edmond spent some time on the Curragh. My Uncle has my grandfathers membership card to Sienn Fein. I have not seen it or a copy of it

He left school at 14 and was an apprentice plumber to Harvey McLaughlin and also at some time worked for the Board of Work in Dublin.

He left Ireland I think in the 1920's and came to England, he met and married Kathleen Mary O'Reilly  who was from Dublin.

My father has managed to trace the Walsh side of the family to an Edmund Walsh from Kilmore, Wexford who died about 1874.

A great aunt told us that there was some connection to the Webbs of Gorey? and that the was some connection to Mayor McSweeney of Cork  as yet we have not been able to prove that connection.

On n my fathers side there is a trial back to a Thomas Collins in Mayo and again another story that there is some distant link to Michael, this is another avenue that I am looking at.

Thomas Collins had a son called Michael who settled in Durham and became a miner. He had three sons called Thomas and Michael and Charles, Michael had a son called Peter my father.

I am hoping to flesh out the stories to find if there is any truth in them and weather we can prove it.

Sorry for the long reply but thank you for the information.

All I can tell you about Terrence MacSwiney's family is that on his father's side they are a Co Cork family that go back many generations  and that his mother was from England.

Hi Ginealas

Thank you for that information. It and still is just a story but I always thought it was an odd thing to say as she mentioned it at my Grandmothers funeral and that was thirty years ago
I would not even know where to start looking to find this connection, she mentioned that my mothers family Walsh were from Wexford and my Greatgrandfather Nicholas Walsh.

The 1911 census shows that father of the family Nicholas was born in Co. Wexford, wife born Dublin. One of the children is listed as being born in Kent ... presumably related to Nicolas' army career.

1911 - Walsh household, Brownstown townland
1901 - Walsh household, Crosshaven Hill

Even though there are multiple counties involved, I'm going move this topic to the Dublin board, since Pop1899 is primarily interested in possible Dublin connections to the events in 1916

do you have a marriage record for Nicholas and Rose ?

from the details in your post on the Wexford board it sounds like his father's details are uncertain ..

link for ref : Re: Walsh of Wexford

We believe that that Nicholas and Rose were married in Chapel Queens Cork in 20th November 1897 but there is some confusion as there is also a record of a marriage in Kent in 1896 .

We have some information that Rose was born in Arklow, Co Wicklow not as stated, Dublin. In 1911 it is stated that they  have been married for 15 years which puts the date of the marriage as 1896

I also see that in 1911 that Nicholas is a carpenter which is correct.
