Easter Uprising - Edmond Christopher Walsh

I am writing initially to find out if you have any information about my Grandfather, Edmond Christopher Walsh , known as Eddie, in the Easter Uprising, the War of Independence and the Civil War.

The information that I have is that he left school in 1914 and was an apprentice with a company called Harvey McLoughlin (who were from our information were builders) from 1914 - 1921 in Dublin. In some papers we have he was also employed by the Board of Public Work Dublin as a plumber and engineer. We know he left Ireland sometime in the early 1920’s.

There is a story that he was involved, my uncle said that he was with the O’Connell Street ‘gang’ (my uncles term) and as he was so young (16) he was used as a look-out. I have looked on the internet and all I have found is the O’Connell Street Garrison. There is also a story that he was involved in gun running and this is why he had to leave his job with the Board of Public Works.

I do not know if the gun running story relates to the Easter uprising or to a subsequent conflict.

Any information would be gratefully received. I have sent a letter to the army archivist in Dublin to see if there is any information there. I have looked at the Roll on Honour on the irish medals website and there is an Edward and a Christopher Walsh  mentioned

I didn't know there was a site that mentioned those that were awarded medals from the time of the "war of independence."

Has any family member seen or heard of this medal? There was a survivors medal issued in 1971 too. (50th anniversary)

I thought what was meant was  that there was a search facility for those awarded the medal/s.

I have the service medal (with bar) and survivors medal.

It was a site that listed people involved in the Easter Uprising. We do not have the medal, so I am trying to find out if he may have been mentioned in any witness statements or other peoples accounts. I believe that there are people who may have looked into the Easter uprising. I would like to gather information to see if I can apply for apply for a certificate of service.

My grandfather passes away in 1968.

Do you have details already on Edmond's family, was he born in Dublin city ?

Hi Shane

He was born on Spike Island in Cork on 31st December 1899,
His father Nicholas Walsh was in the Army and we know that Edmond spent some time on the Curragh. My Uncle has my grandfathers membership card to Sienn Fein. I have not seen it or a copy of it

He left school at 14 and was an apprentice plumber to Harvey McLaughlin and also at some time worked for the Board of Work in Dublin.

He left Ireland I think in the 1920's and came to England, he met and married Kathleen Mary O'Reilly  who was from Dublin.

My father has managed to trace the Walsh side of the family to an Edmund Walsh from Kilmore, Wexford who died about 1874.

A great aunt told us that there was some connection to the Webbs of Gorey? and that the was some connection to Mayor McSweeney of Cork  as yet we have not been able to prove that connection.

On n my fathers side there is a trial back to a Thomas Collins in Mayo and again another story that there is some distant link to Michael, this is another avenue that I am looking at. 

Thomas Collins had a son called Michael who settled in Durham and became a miner. He had three sons called Thomas and Michael and Charles, Michael had a son called Peter my father.

I am hoping to flesh out the stories to find if there is any truth in them and weather we can prove it.
