« on: Wednesday 11 January 12 14:09 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know where this is ? Its appeared as a birth location for one of my ancestors (b.1814) and when i type it in on google i get absolutely no results!

Or any suggestions where it might be if whoever taking the census has spelt a place wrong?

All anwsers welcome as this is stopping me looking back a further generation!

Thank you!

Where does it appear? Census / certificate etc

Can you scan and add a copy?

I have been on findmypast.co.uk and searched the free 1881 census for my ancestor called Mary Ryan from Pontypool (born 1848 in Merthyr) and her father is living with them by the name of Dennis Donovan.

It states he is currently in his later years (born 1814) and under "where born" it has the word "Twynague".  I cant get the proper census at the moment as i have no credit.

Probably a mis transcription due to hard to read handwriting. Maybe SKS with a subscription to Findmypast or Ancestry can help you out by posting a copy

well, it's not a Welsh place name as he gives his place of birth as Ireland in other years. Census ref is RG11/5250 folio 89 pg 33.
It might begin Qu.

Funnily enough i found a place name similar in Ireland.

It would make a bit of sense as his daughter also married an Irishman.  Im sure he would approve!

Thank you.  Will try searching on the Irish Find My Past website.

I suspect it is meant to say Donegal.

What looks like a 'y' in the middle of the word is actually part of the 'm' inthe line below.

The 1881 transcription is actually taken from that on Family Search, so FindMyPast isn't to blame. You'll find exactly the same birthplace given on Ancestry, for the same reason.

Hello, We may have the same ancestor Denis Donovan born 1814. I have been tracing the descendants this evening. We may be able to help each other. His daughter Mary married a William Ryan. They had 3 children Dennis, William and Mary. Mary was my great grandmother. I am not sure about Twynague either, probably Irish origin. Would love to hear from you.
