Nancie (Hummerston) Miller, d. 1907
« on: Wednesday 11 January 12 02:24 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for an exact date of death/burial for Nancie (Hummerston) Miller, the daughter of Henry Hummerston and Mary Louisa Oldfield. She's apparently buried with her parents at Harlow Hill Cemetery, Harrogate. The gravemarker reads "Nancie Hummerston 1907".

I believe she died in South Africa, [then] Northern Rhodesia or enroute. I have been unable to locate a death record. She married Adam Cooke Robertson Miller in 1903.

Are there cemetery records? Burial permits?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi there

I can't see a death registered in England for her, there are a couple of photos of the grave where she is buried with her parents Henry &  Mary (both have ages) but it looks like it just says 1907, so not very helpful. You can request a free image from the site for you records - seacrh either by name or it's shown in Harrogate Harlow Hill Section L.

Harrogate Borough Council suggest contacting their Bereavement Service Office to  search their burial and cremation records  - see their website http://www.harrogate.gov.uk/Pages/harrogate-966.aspx

Thank you! The gravestone photo is actually what precipitated my post. And with viewing a high resolution version, it appears the date is May 3, 1907.

I had also e-mailed the Bereavement Service Office, but to date have not received a reply.

Thanks again for posting!

Hi Marty,

We have some photos of Nancie and her life in Africa. we know a little bit about her life too and what happened to her. We were given the photos by an old lady who was married to one of her relations (possibly nephew). How are you related to her? what do you know about her life? We are trying to piece together her travels round africa and learn something about her life (hence how we stubled across this post!)

What photos would you like to see? we have photos of a grave (presumably in Rhodesia) and of nancie and of her husband, and of her house, and lots more that she took!!

Get back in touch with us!!

Hi Gerry...Thanks so much for your reply. It's really thrilling to hear from you and read your message.

First, here's Nancie on my online tree:

http://www.ourfamilyancestry.net/getperson.php?personID=I12329&tree=beerman

Her husband, Adam Cooke Robertson Miller, is my cousin. Our common ancestor is William Cook of Airdrie, New Monkland, Scotland, and later, Dundee, Kane Co., Illinois, USA.

I have no photos of this part of the family, so anything you'd like to share would be wonderful--Nancie and Adam, her grave, house, etc. I'm also in touch with a descendant of a cousin of a cousin of Nancie's sister, so I would share these with her as well. Adam, as you may know, was a commissioner of some type for the government and was posted in Northern Rhodesia. After Nancie died, he later married Hermione Waylen (1913). I beleive they divorced in the 1930s before his death in 1938 in Newarkhill, Ayr Co., Scotland. For more about Adam:

Thanks again for your message! This is really exciting.
