John HARDING - 1st Devon Militia
« on: Monday 09 January 12 21:44 GMT (UK) »
John HARDING of the 1st Devon Militia & Charity PARTRIDGE of this parish were married in this Church by Banns NO 742, this 3rd day of January one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight by me John GANDY, Vicar. John & Charity both made their mark. In the presence of Mary BOBINS & Thos RICHARDS.

Help ..... How do I go about finding any details about John Harding and the 1st Devon Militia? I don't know anything about him.

Any advise would be great, thanks

hi

just looked in pension records for j harding but nothing there for him , but as a check have you come across his surname spelt any other way as it,s always possible he,s been mistranscribed , the other thing is that if he served less than 7 yrs his service record would have been destroyed by the regiment after 20 yrs .

Thanks for your help.

I have seen other variations on the spelling of HARDING, such as HARDEN, HARDIN, HARDEN but not in this case, although given how names were mistranscribed it could be a distinct possibility.

He was serving at the time of marriage in 1798 and his second child was born in Exeter in 1807 which I think is the base for the Devon Militia so perhaps he was still serving in 1807.

He was from Harpford, his other children were born there. His wife Charity died in Harpford in 1825. I don't really know anything else about him.

Thanks again

The muster books for the 1st (or East) Devon Militia are in the National Archives.
