Metropolitan Transit Comissioners Officer

Can any one tell me if there is a list for Metropolitan Transit Commissioner Officer for New South Wales, between 1830 to 1860

I have look at the state records, State library and did not find anything.

A snippet in the SMH indicates the Public Vehicles Regulation Act came into force 1 Apr 1873.

So sorry, the only other information is that a William Lockwood was a Metropolitan Transit Commissioner Officer for New South Wales

It would appear from a previous thread that John LOCKWOOD was born Poplar 1810 and died NSW 1880.

What was the source of your information about his occupation ...eg a marriage certificate, death certificate etc?

The Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) was formed in 1879. The Inspector General was a member of the Metropolitan Transit Commissioners who were operational from 1 April, 1873 until 29 August, 1900. All of the powers of the Metropolitan Transit Commissioners were transferred to the Inspector General of Police following the closure of the former agency. This included making by-laws regulating the mode, licensing and controlling of public vehicles (such as omnibuses and hackney carriages), their drivers and conductors.


Your dates are well before the dates the Commission was in existence.

It was on his will and death cert, as Metropolitan Transit Commissioners and Metropolitan Transit Comissioners Officer.

"Metropolitan" would be a smaller area than is now considered as Sydney. 

And in the period 1830 - 1860, it would be confined to Sydney Town.   I have had a good look through my records, notes, books, etc and simply put, I have not found any mention of Metropolitan Transit Commissioners operating in that era.   As Cando has noted, yes, they were around in the 1870s, but NOT EARLIER, sorry.

I can see a William LOCKWOOD at 6 Helena terrace, Pyrmont in the 1873 Sands Directory.   

Perhaps he was associated with TRAMS.   ???  ???  ??? Of course that is Speculations on my part

It is a mystery, what william did, but will h ave to consider that he worked up until he died in 1880. he could have been with the trams. who knows have nmot found any thing else out

What was his usual residence please? 

Did his estate require Probating, and have you accessed any Probate Packet held at the NSW SRO ?

Did he marry, and what occupation was given on the marriage certificate?   What occupation was given on the b.c. for any of his children ?
