Newfoundland....in Lincolnshire??
« on: Sunday 08 January 12 18:38 GMT (UK) »
I've posted this elsewhere but thought it was worth asking on an Lincs forum:

A recently found ancestor shows up on the 1851 census as being born in "Newfoundland, Lincolnshire" - the image is here though I believe I've read it correctly:

Do you know where this is? - I can't find any trace of it anywhere!

Thanks for reading!

What was the person's name? :)
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Could it be the name of a farm?  I recall reading in a history of Welsh emigrants that the only trace of their North American colonisation attempt was a farm in West Wales called "Newfoundland"
Richard Wernham (Berkshire 18th century),
William Hissey (1805 to 1813, Hampstead Norris),
Kapirin (Siberia 19th Century),
Kitching 1850,
Mary Howse born 1806 ish,
Chris Truelove marr. John Pocock 2-7-1696, Kintbury, Berks

What was the person's name? :)

She's Elizabeth Starmer (maiden name Dawson) - in 1851 and 1861 she gives Newfoundland, Lincs as her birthplace. In 1871 she says it's Skirbeck (on the outskirts of Boston).

There are one or two other people looking for her online but their posts date back to about 2003 and I haven't managed to make contact with them.

It may well be the name of an old house or the like - I'm just hoping that someone may have heard of it in their own researches.

Thanks for taking your time over this.
