Hello

This is my first venture, into this part of the World

I have just found out, that my Great Aunt, SARAH BOOTH nee Calvert, born April 23rd 1862
in Yorkshire was living at......

36a Bertrams Road, Bertrams, Transvaal. SA

When her only son Fred Booth , was killed in 1916, whilst seving with The Canadian Forces.
She was the widow of James Henry Booth,a Stone Mason

Could anyone help me find out what happened to her after that please.

Jeannie, have you seen this re the son. This is where he went missing in action.

Don't know if this is your Sarah ....  I did a quick search on the South African National Archives for Sarah Booth and there are 2 entries :

Description: BOOTH, JAMES HENRY
Start: 1918
End: 1918
Remarks: Surviving Spouse SARAH BOOTH (born CALVERT)

Description: WRIGHT, ROBERT
Start: 1936
End: 1936
Remarks: Surviving Spouse SARAH BOOTH WRIGHT

I'm rather new at this and not sure if this will be of any use to you.

Although not new to this, I do not know how to access South African Archives, so thankyou again

Hi there,
Here is the web address for our national archives.  They keep civil records.  We do not have access to BMD's.  The archives are notoriously difficult to deal with if you want documents.  It can literally take months if you ever get a response.  Try checking www.eggsa.org, they offer a document retrieval service from all the repositories except Cape Town for a very reasonable fee. They do explain how to go about ordering documents.  It will be much easier than the archives themselves. Here is an example of what you will find on NAAIRS.

If I understand correctly, it would seem that James Henry Booth died in 1918 ? I know that he was deceased , when Fred's memorial was erected, after the War.

What a shame . They lost a infant son, on the voyage to Sydney, where they lived prior to moving to SA

Hi,
I know what you mean, once I start I can't stop.  There were other "hits" on the naairs for James Booth but I did not look at them closely.  You could check them out to see which ones belong to your James.  Have fun.
