Help with old Scottish record please

Hello Rootschatters,

I have a Scottish marriage record, Edinburgh, 1819, which has the letters OGTP or OGFP after the groom's name.  Does anyone know what these letters mean?

Not sure.... but I think T P stands for 'this Parish'

I would say it stands for Old Greyfriars Parish, Edinburgh.

Thank you both for your input.  If he was from Greyfriars Parish, then I think it ties in with the rest of my tree and could solve a huge brick wall!!!

OGTP stands for Old Greyfriar's Tolbooth Parish.

Hi hiszafer,

Whilst it is possible that some may use the abbreviation OGTP for Old Greyfriars Tolbooth Parish today, such a parish is a modern amalgamation of historical parishes and therefore would not have been referred to in a document dated 1819. There have been many incarnations of parishes in Edinburgh over the years, I believe the parish is now Greyfriers Tolbooth and Highland Church.

definately 'OGFP' Old Greyfriars Parish; you will probably see entries for 'NGFP' New Greyfriars Parish on the same page, these abbreviations seem to have been used fairly often in the Edinburgh registers.
There were originally 4, then 6 and finally by the early/mid 1700s? the 10 parishes which remained unchanged until at least after 1890s.

One of the reasons I added the Edinburgh Parish map to my website  www.hoodfamily.info/misc/miscedinmaplarge.html  was there didn't seem to be any map of this type available at the time so I had to do one myself!!!. Luckily back in 1985 I had photocopied the original map showing parish boundaries thinking it would be useful one day.
