Hi there,
Just an update.
I have been buying BMD certificates and have discovered something curious.
When my Edward GORMLEY (186* - 1930) married his first wife Bridget McGONAGLE (1868 - 1913) in 1903 he appears to have signed the register. His father is listed as Jas GORMEY (decd), who was a labourer. Subsequently when he registers births of his sons, or the death of his uncle James GORMLY in 1911 or that of his wife, Bridget GORMLEY née McGONAGLE who died in 1913 in childbirth he can no longer 'write' and he is registered with his mark.
Edward GORMLEY then a year later marries Jane McLAUGHLIN in 1914 and his father is listed as Edwd GORMLEY (decd). Signs again with his mark.
It is definitely the same man.

I have searched in vain for his birth. Family tales have him born in Scotland but I am not sure of anything now. Really hope @markinson01 still visits this site or if anyone else has any info!

People did as they were told.
He was told to “sign here” at the marriages, so he did, told to “put your mark here” by the registrar, so he did.

My grandmother had worked in France teaching English, so well able to read and write, when she registered her first two children she signed then moved to a different district, next two children she put her mark.
