Bedminster marriage - DYER
« on: Saturday 07 January 12 12:27 GMT (UK) »
I am not sure whether to post this under Somerset or Gloucestershire given the location, but I am trying to find the parish marriage record for William Dyer to Dinah Williams 10 November 1835. Previously the only location I knew was Bristol but Familysearch.org has updated the record and it now states Bedminster, Somerset. I had thought of conducting research through the Somerset County Record Office until I realised how much of a search it could be given the amount of churches in the area.
I am trying to find more information about the couple, particularly William, as I have had no success in searching for his origins. Census records give him a birthdate of c1811 and place of birth as Bath, Somerset, yet none of the extensive online records for Bath have yielded anything.

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Bedminster parish was in the county of Somerset but the Diocese of Bristol, as were a few other parishes on the southern edge of Bristol. In all such cases the parish records are held in Bristol Record Office rather than Taunton.

Bristol are not quite as helpful as Taunton in making copies available for transcription so these parishes are not well covered online. Although as you've noticed familysearch have added a lot of Bristol records lately.

There are CDs available from the Bristol & Avon FHS providing indexes to most Bristol Diocese CMBs 1754-1837. The wedding you're interested in is on the Marriage CD, at St. John's, Bedminster

10.11.1835 DYER WILLIAM BACH OTP DINAH WILLIAMS SPIN OTP B

It doesn't give the full details, but probably the only info missing is the names of the witnesses.

If you allow some margin on the census claims, there are a couple of possibilities for William's baptism in the Bath area.

One born Dec 1812 in Batheaston to John and Mary Dyer, a brewer
or bap 1815 in Widcombe to John and Sarah Dyer, labourer.

Also there are still some gaps in the online coverage of Bath, in particular Bathwick before 1812 and a bit of Walcot in 1813. I have copies of those and will have a look later.

Hi

I'm afraid I can't see William Dyer in either of the registers I mentioned.

There was a John Dyer, son of Samuel and Elizabeth, in Bathwick in 1811.

There was also a William Chivers Dyer, son of John and Ann, born 30 Sep, bap. 26 Nov 1809. Recorded twice, at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapels in New King Street and in Bathwick. However his parents' abode is given as Frome.

Hi David,

Thanks very much for all of your effort. It is good to know the church in which they married, and although the entry doesn't really shed any light on the parish where they would have been born or baptised, it is still useful. I have found the baptism for Dinah in Bristol, so I am supposing that where it states both of this parish, they may have just been living there at the time of the marriage.

Thanks also for the info about Bedminster, I had only seen on a map that it was in close proximity to Bristol, so that clears up that confusion.

I will note the baptisms you found for William Dyer's, hopefully one of them could be the one! I have widened my search outside of Bath, but of course there is no way of knowing which if any other parishes could be correct.

Thanks again,

Kelly.

You only had to be resident in the parish for a few weeks to be put as OTP, so it's no quide to birthplace.

The Bristol Diocese Baptisms Index gives two Dinah Williams in 1815.

At St. James
10.12.1815 24-OCT-1815 DINAH WILLIAM SARAH WILLIAMS ST.JAMES CORDWAINER

and at Oldland
20.08.1815 INFANT DINAH WILLIAM MARTHA WILLIAMS MOUNTHILL COLLIER

Oldland is on the NE edge of Bristol. Probably at that time someone born there would not have said they were born in Bristol, so the one from St James is more likely. (They're both on Familysearch, but this gives you the abode and occupation as well.)

Thank you very much for all of your help David.

I am certain that Dinah was the one baptised to William and Sarah as I have found census records which suggest they are her parents. Meanwhile I will keep up the search for William Dyer... I have decided to get the birth certificate of his daughter Eliza Ann born in 1861 to his second marriage to Ann to shed light on the name of the second wife, in order to then get the marriage certificate, which will confirm his father's name, at the very least.

Thanks again  :)

Hello Kelly, I too am searching the Dyer's Marie Lee Dyer being my ancestor from William Dyer and Dinah Williams.
I have been off on the wrong tangent. but although I cannot find the birth of William born 1811 in Bath according to Census's 1841-61. I have found a marriage. of William Dyer wid . to Ann Meek or Meck spin,  19 Jan 1857 at St. Clements Bristol. It states  Father of William was William Dyer and Father of Ann was  Adam Meek.
Dinah Williams parents are William Williams and Sarah Vaughan.married 11 apr 1801  and Sarah Vaughan was born 16 sept 1781 in staunton Monmouthshire. to Charles Vaughan and Mary Jay , who were married 25 Jul 1774 at Much Dewchurch, Herefordshire.
There are about 5 or 6 possible William Williams in Bristol within a 2 year age range,so will be difficult to decide which one is which , none of the names for the children appear in previous generations of the Williams found to date. Will go  to Bath And Bristol within next few months so will try to find them  hope this helps Lynne.

Hello Lynne, great to get your message.
My husband's direct ancestor is Frank Lee Dyer. I had followed a wrong path for a while until I too found the details of William Dyer's second marriage to Ann Meek, having purchased the certificate to help identify his father. Alas it is another William! I haven't gotten any further than that. I have gone back as far as Dinah's parents but had nothing on Sarah Vaughan, it is good to have that info, thanks. I didn't expect I would get too far with the Williams name. I had hoped that the middle names of the Dyer children all being "Lee" might be a clue to their ancestry but I haven't had any luck with that.
I would be so grateful for anything you might be able to find in Bath or Bristol, and am more than happy to share information on our line of descent if you would like it.
Cheers, Kelly.
