Laurel Jean SMITH - Medal Return Challenge
« on: Saturday 07 January 12 08:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

while relocating my father into his retirement village I came across a female's relative badge from world war 2,

the service number engraved on the back is A110812 which belongs to a Laurel Jean Smith, born 14th June 1921 in Albury, NSW.

Service Record : http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/DetailsReports/ItemDetail.aspx?Barcode=5336648

WW2 Nominal Roll : http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/script/veteran.asp?ServiceID=R&VeteranID=952556

Details about the medal : http://www.awm.gov.au/encyclopedia/badges/female_relative.asp

I have confirmed with his parents that the medal is of no relevance to our family and they are not sure how it got to us at all, either is he.

So I'm hoping to return the medal to someone that it does mean something to, hoping someone on here can shed the some light on Laurel Smith.

Thanks in advance

Michael.

Your link to her Service Record on NAA has timed out however her WW2 Service summary contains more information.

Have you considered you may be seeking information about a living person and that is not permitted on rootschat.

There are two marriages on the NSW bdm website post 1946 however Jean enlisted in Melbourne and was discharged at Tocumwal.  Marriage registrations are not available post 1942 in Victoria.

You state that she is a relative so you would obviously have more information about her parents, siblings etc.

Hi

Laurel Jean Hancock nee Smith died Nambucca Heads NSW, December 2000.  There are a number of Family trees on Ancestry that have her listed as a family member.  You could try contacting them.

regards
