FAWCETT, Herbert Stockdale - Alberta
« on: Friday 06 January 12 03:27 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

Have found a reference on Google Books to
Herbert Stockdale FAWCETT, died 4 November 1918.
Also says he farmed in Alberta.

Where will I find an obituary or death notice?

Thank You
Jean

We can't help if you don't include information on where he died (more specific than Alberta - if that's where he died).
Canada: Patterson, Brown, Haidenger/Heidinger, Meyer, Johnston(e), Gorsuch, Kitchin/Kitchen
United States: Patterson, Smith, Brown, Vance, Bower(s), Newberry, Best, Love, Gorsuch
England (Northumberland): Brown, Whitfield, Henderson
Scotland (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fife, East Lothian): Johnston(e), Bell, Galloway, Campbell, Robertson, Williamson, Thomson, Crawford
Germans from Russia: Haidenger/Heidinger, Meyer, Meach, Lorenz

Hello Jean, Jacquie, and vbain,

Thought I may try and help out with a few thoughts.... Unfortunately Alberta is a tough province to research, tougher than Saskatchewan at times I did however find a few tidbits that may help.

Herbert had a homestead in Alberta, township 58, 26, w4 close to Cylde, Alberta...

- long link to abgensoc.ca -

There is also a Herbert Fawcett living in Edmonton/Calgary in the 1916, as well as a burial of a Herbert Fawcett in Mount Pleasant Cemetery dated for November 27, 1918 (fairly close).  There is a Thomas and Leila Fawcett buried nearby died in 1948 ??

http://webproxy.edmonton.ca/external/cemeteries/Default.aspx

There is no obituary index for either the Calgary Herald or the Edmonton Journal but there may be a microfilm copy of the paper that may have a death notice there (but it'll be hit or miss)... plus that time is close to the Spanish flu so there may not anything specific...

HOpe this helps,

Jeff

Thank You for the responses:

Jacquie in Canada: My reference - "Repton School Register - supplement to 1910 edition" only says "farmed in Alberta".

vbain: There are several of us following this particular Fawcett family - I think I am the first one to find that Herbert got as far as Alberta. ;D

jeffster: Thank you for the links you have given. I am now off to see what the homestead link will cost me. (And tell me).  As a New Zealander "homestead" means to me the actual house of a large farm (several 100 acres) or a station (several 1,000 acres). Obviously "homestead" has another meaning for Canadians.

Regards
Jean

The Repton school information did give him a birth of  b. Aug. 4, 1860 though, and did say he farmed in Alberta. I imagine you had him in U.K. 1911 as you never asked for him on census.

There was another Herbert S. Fawcett in Alberta, on census, so this will distinguish him from the other...

Hello JJ

Not sure what you mean.

I have tried the 1911 Canadian Census - but I am stuck with what to put in the search fields - I put in Clyde but could not find Township 58.

Any hints most welcome.
Thank You
Jean

You never asked for him on census so I assumed he came after the 1911 U.k.?
Here he is in 1911 and says immigrated in 1878 http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=10427
Edmonton district in 1906 but age if off and this says immigration year 1904...

I see you have lots of help, but thought I'd pop in with Herbert's land application.

It's been my experience that land applications for homesteads were for 160 acres. A house was not a prerequisite, but there was often a requirement that they develop at least 10 acres for farming per year.

Good luck.
