Patrick O'Malley and Percy White - Australian relatives looking for help
« on: Thursday 05 January 12 11:07 GMT (UK) »
Patrick O'Malley is my mother's adoptive father although she only found out that she was not his natural daughter after his death.

Patrick was born in County Mayo on or about 6 March 1888 and came to Queensland Australia (North Queensland in the Cairns, Gordonvale, Smithfield area) sometime before 1919 when electoral rolls show him living in Gordonvale.  He died in Cairns, Queensland in Jan 1971.

His brother Hugh also came to North Queensland, married and died there.  From family photos I have, I know Patrick had at least two sisters, Annie and Mary and he had a nephew Owen O'Malley who lived in New Zealand.  I think Owen was the son of another brother.

Patrick married my grandmother Winifred Margaret O'Malley in Oct 1934 and adopted my two year old mother.  On Winifred's deathbed in 1989 she told my mother that her real father was a man by the name of Percy White.  He had also come to Queensland from Ireland to cut cane (possibly with a brother or relative Matthew White) but had apparently deserted my grandmother when she told him she was pregnant, and family history says he went back to Ireland to a wife my grandmother knew nothing about.

I am looking for information on both of Patrick O''Malley and Percy White although I have no other details than what I have stated here.  I would love to find records of their births, parents, immigration details etc or any family who may still be living in Ireland.

Thanks very much

Hello,
The Irish census for 1901 and 1911 is online at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

I have had a look in 1901 but not much help-sorry.look for both Malley and O'Malley when you search.

Do the marriage or death certificates give any other details re Patrick?

Yes the family at Keel East do look interesting.  If both 1901 and 1911 are taken together, all of the family members known to me are there.  If I could only find a record of Patrick and Hugh immigrating to Australia I could be sure.

Thanks so much for you help thus far.

I have now been able to confirm that the family in Keel East, Achill are in fact my grandfather Patrick, his parents and brothers and sisters.  However I have not been able to discover the maiden name of Patrick's mother Margaret, nor her parents or those of Patrick's father Owen and so I cannot trace the family back any further.  I have also not been able to find any record of Patrick O'Malley emigrating to Australia although I know he did between 1911 and 1919.  Patrick's brother Hugh also emigrated to Cairns, Queensland, Australia but again no record of it.

I have been able to find a record of Patrick's brother Edward O'Malley and Edward's son Owen in Luton, Bedfordshire in 1948-50.  Edward O'Malley married a Lovelle girl but I don't know which one and when, or how they ended up in Luton from Achill in County Mayo.  I have found Edward's son Owen's immigration papers showing him emigrating to Queensland to live with my grandfather Patrick in 1950.  From there I know he went to New Zealand but I can't find a record of it.

I also know that Patrick's sister Mary died sometime between the 1901 and 1911 census but not when or how.

Any help anyone can give me to find more details of Patrick, his parents Owen and Margaret O'Malley and his many brothers and sisters would be very welcome!

thanks
