HANLON/HANLAN - John, Mary and Kate
« on: Thursday 05 January 12 10:57 GMT (UK) »
Kate Caroline McMahen (nee Hanlon or Hanlan) is my great grandmother.  She married my great grandfather Joseph Moore McMahen in Melbourne in 1889.  O her marriage certificate she lists her birthplace as Clifden, Ireland and gives her age as 26.  Her parents are John and Mary Hanlon.  I believe that she and her family lived in Hay, New South Wales at some point and that is where she met Joseph.  Kate died in Western Australia in 1936.

I cannot find any record of Kate or her family coming to Australia.  I also cannot find any record of her birth or that of her parents or any siblings in Ireland.

Is anyone able to help?

thanks very much

Here is some information about tracing ancestors in Ireland

Introduction to Irish Records

The Civil Parish for the Clifden area is Omey Parish.

Griffiths Valuation shows a John Hanlon in the town of Clifden.

Hi there,

Hanlon is a fairly rare name in Galway and if you look at the 1901 irish census there is only one family of Hanlon's in Clifden DED.

www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Clifden/Glenbrickeen/1369498/

It also looks like this family originated in Mayo, Ireland as this is where the elder Hanlon's state as being their place of birth.

Thank you Tara and Heywood.   I appreciate your replies. Those individuals might be related to my Hanlons, but until I can find birth certificates or records of John, Mary and Kate's immigration to Australia I can't verify.  The search goes on ....

kind regards, Debra

Hi Debra,
You would need to look for Kate's church baptism record as there will be no birth certificate.

If Kate Caroline Hanlon was 26 when she married Joseph Moore McMahen in Melbourne in 1889, that would put her birth at 1862 or 1863. Civil registration (i.e. birth certificates) only started in Ireland in 1864.

Do you know what religion she was? Her marriage and/or burial records could help. That will narrow down which church registers you are looking for.
