jersey marriage lookup completed
« on: Wednesday 04 January 12 11:45 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find some information about my great-great-grandmother.  She married John Thomas Jeune in Jersey in about 1889.  Her name was Victoire Francaise but I am uncertain about her surname.  She already had a son aged about 20 but I am not sure if she was ever married to the father so this may or may not be a second marriage!  Her surname may be Lecomte or Le Conte or she may have gone by her maiden name which is unknown to me.  I am hoping her marriage certificate to John Jeune will sort out this confusion.  I would be very greatful for any help with this.  Thanks

I was at the Jersey Archive this morning when I saw your message so had a quick look. This is what it says on the marriage entry.

14/4/1888 at St Saviour's Church

John Thomas Jeune, 43, Widower, occupation Labourer, Living in St Helier, born in Grouville. Father Philippe Jeune, Blacksmith
to
Victoire Francoise, 44, Widow of Alphonse Le Conte, Living in St Helier, born in Baynes, department de
Caen. Father Pierre Francoise, Carpenter

The witnesses were Aimable Le Conte and T.P. Laurens

So her maiden name was Francoise, it was not unusual in Jersey at that time for widowed ladies to be known by their maiden names.

Thank you so much for your reply. It was very kind of you to take the trouble to look it up for me.  I am really pleased to have solved the mystery and finally know who my great-great-grandparents were and where they came from.  Not sure I will ever trace any further back as I have no idea how to research family history in France, but it is great to have this much info.  Thanks again.

Hello again.  Have just realised you are the same person who looked up the other marriage for me!  Thanks.

The records for Calvados are on line, unfortunately, unlike some other French sites, you need to pay to see the records - you also need a basic knowledge of French.

I can't post the link but if you Google Archives départementales du Calvados you should find it.
