Wilkinson, Charles Henry b1868
« on: Sunday 01 January 12 16:11 GMT (UK) »
I have his army attestation papers (Sherwood Foresters), and am looking to fill in more details/see if anyone else has a similar line. His father was Isaac Archer Wilkinson b1847, grandfather Isaac Wilkinson b abt 1814, but that's all I have on the family history.
For his army career I have the following: His service in the Sherwood Foresters ran from 21st November 1886 until 19th September 1898. His service conduct was listed as "exemplary".

He signed up in Derby in September 1886, was transferred to Kilkenny on 16/12/1886, transferred again on 5/7/1887, to Limerick on 19/1/1888, back to Limerick on 28/1/1889 (having been transferred away 15/10/18889), to Devonport on 1/5/1889, Colchester on ?/12/1889, and finally to Derby on 27/10/1892.

He was in the 1st Battalion, transferred to the Army Reserves on 18/10/1895, and finally discharged on 19/08/1898.

Would love to find out more about what the Regiment would have been involved in, and to be able to trace further back from Isaac.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about Charles' army record, but maybe there's some info on what the Sherwood Foresters were doing at

www.wfrmuseum.org.uk

I've had a bit of a look at some records and have found an 1841 census record for Isaac, b. abt 1811 (but bear in mind that adults ages were rounded on that census) living in [what looks like] Rivett Street, Derby. He's a "porter" living with

Elizabeth, age 31, not born in Derbyshire
Sarah, 5, born Derbyshire
Hannah, 3, born Derbyshire
John, 10mths, born Derbyshire
Isaac, 79, not born in Derbyshire
and
Martha, 32, born Derbyshire, silk winder

[I'm thinking that Martha and Isaac - the head of the household one - are brother and sister]

I also found him on the 1871 census, which shows him as being born abt 1808.

Do you have a marriage for Isaac and Elizabeth, or any other info?

STG

Edited to say : IGI has a marriage on 26 Feb 1833 at St Peter's, Derby (same parish they're living in in 1841) between an Isaac Wilkinson and an Elizabeh ARCHER.

Always looking for GOODWINS in Berkshire :)

Ooh, thank you, that's very helpful. I have very limited information on this section of the family so far. Hadn't seen the 1833 marriage, which looks a likely contender, particularly considering the son Isaac's middle name is Archer.

Thanks!
