Hi Wivenhoe,
Thank you very much for the information about William HAMMOND. Just checking that he was in the Australian forces ( see answer below) because Gertrude had cousins born in England and they fought in the Australian Army.

Now I know what happened to William HAMMOND. I think I have found William HAMMOND on the Commonwealth War Graves site - died 24/12/1916 and buried in    BRIGHTON CITY CEMETERY (BEAR ROAD).

Hi Dee,
Thank you for the link to the newspaper article about Gertrude and her husband Samuel Bateman. As to Gertrude and Dorothy having middle names, I have no idea because I am descendant from William DEVEY's sister Lucy RICE nee DEVEY who died in 1930 in England. My branch did not know about the siblings in Australia.

So thank you both very much for your information and help.

Cheers for 2012
Helen

Hello Helen
I have just discovered your messages regarding William Devey and his wife Margaret Eleanor.  I have been researching this family extensively and have a great deal of information on them.  My connection to the family is through one of the daughters from Margaret Eleanor's first marriage, Ethel Margaret Smedley.  She was my grandfather's first wife.  I also have a lot of information on their daughter Gertrude Devey as I have been in touch with some of her grandchildren in Australia.  Dorothy has been more difficult to track.  They moved to Australia with their parents, while the two daughters from the first marriage remained in England.  I also have photographs of graves, etc.  If you require any further information, I would be happy to assist.
Regards
Gail

Hi Helen
I have been unable thus far, to find the death of John William Smedley.  Yes, Ethel Margaret Smedley married Alexander James Price (1904) and they had a son Edward James Robert William Price (1905).  In 1910 they sailed aboard the Saxon to South Africa leaving the boy behind in England.  He stayed with relatives and died at the age of about 16.  By 1913, AJP and Ethel Margaret were separated in South Africa.  I cannot find any Divorce Records.  But by 1913, AJP was "married" to my grandmother.  Ethel remained in South Africa until about 1934 when she returned to England.  She is buried in an unmarked grave in Bexhill Cemetery.  I have her Death Certificate which records her as being married to Alexander James Price and that she was a Missionary.  I am away from home and do not have all details with me unfortunately.  I can supply more detailed info in a few weeks' time.  Kind regards Gail
