Divorce?
« on: Friday 30 December 11 23:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello and Happy New Year!

I have Charles Owen Haines b 1874, Dunsden who married Florence Lunnon b 1878, Reading, in 1899.

They had 3 children Charles, Violet and Donald and lived in Reading (1901 and 1911).

Apparently Florence had at least 2 children born after those with Charles, Florence and Arthur, b 1917 and 1920.

Is it possible to find out whether Charles and Florence got divorced?  She appears to have remarried a Thomas Plummell in 1924.

Thank you!  :)

Hi,

I can't see the marriage to Thomas in 1924.   :-\   * Found a Florence Lunnon marrying Thomas  PUMMELL.

Do you have a copy of that certificate?

I can find 2 deaths in Hendon;  Florence Haines in 1955, age 76 and Charles O Haines in 1954, age 79.

How certain are you that Charles was not dead when she remarried?  And are you certain that she did remarry?

There are two Pummell births registered after the date of the marriage with the correct maiden surname.  But if this is your Florence, she would have been 48 at the time of the last birth.  While this is not impossible, given the date, I think she would have been quite lucky to have become a mother again at that age.

There are a number of other Florence Lunnon births in the area so it is not an unusual combination of names.

I think you may have to get that marriage certificate of 1924 to find out if this is your Florence.  Either that or the death certificate.  Checking Pummell deaths, there are a couple in Bournemouth area in 1970s/80s which might be Thomas & Florence who married in 1924, but the age would not match your Florence.

Thank you for your info. I got the name wrong it was Pummell not Plummell.  I had Charles death as 1954 Edgware, Middx and Florence 1955 Stoke Mandeville.

I have Charles dying after the alledged remarriage in 1924, and I have contact with someone who has a witness to the actual marriage.  Florence Senior had a daughter called Florence Violet. Yes I saw quite a few Florence Lunnons when searching, and will do some more looking!

Thanks

Hello,
Added to the social stigma involved, divorce was also very difficult and extremely expensive to obtain prior to the late 20th century, as was annullment. Very few people, particularly women with no other means of support,  took that route out of a marriage.

Only the marriage cert of Florence Lunnon to Thomas Pummell will tell you whether she was married before. Almost certainly if this had been the case I think she would have remarried with either both surnames of Lunnon and Haines on the cert and registration, or married using her previous married surname, not her maiden name.

The two deaths that Nanny Jan mentioned are the right sort of ages so would be worth further investigation.
