Funny Place names
« on: Friday 30 December 11 22:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi All
I have a Thomas Womble who is in Finningley 1841 to 1861.  He claims to be born in "Alexton" or "Booton".  I have looked on Google maps and can't find anywhere like.
1851 is HO 107 Piece 2384 Folio 296 Page 21

1861 is RG9 Piece 3522 Folio 119 page 9

Could anyone decipher this??

Happy Christmas

Not sure if it will help, but there is a place called Blaxton less than a mile from Finningley :

I think the places you are looking for are Ollerton and Boughton

Ollerton was origially called Alreton or Allerton
1851 census image -although faint- reads to me as "Alerton"

Boughton is pronounced "Booton"

Ollerton and Boughton "kind of" run in to each other

I think "Alexton "is just a bad transcription

This is just my opinion!

Hi everyone,
I agree with Suzard - I think it's Ollerton.
Although I couldn't find a Thomas Womble on the Notts Baptism CD there is a Thomas Woombell baptised at Wellow ( near Ollerton) on 25 May 1806 on familysearch. This could be him.
Hope so!
Paulene :)

Thanks
I will check out Wellow as I have an old copy.  I am not sure this is him though - there were a number of family branches all living in the same few villages.  Will check it out and let you know

Hi KF,

There is a Thomas Woomble baptised on 5 Sep 1810 in Boughton - parents William & Sarah. This date fits a bit better with his census ages.

I also see his siblings:
George bap. 10 Apr 1803
William bap. 27 Apr 1806

William Wombell married Sarah Morton on 10 Aug 1801 in Boughton.

Where did you get the Ollerton PR?  Is it on the CD you can get from Notts FHS???  I will invest in one I think.

Cheers

Do you mean Boughton? In any case, both Boughton and Ollerton are on the Notts FHS CDs. You can view the coverage here: http://www.nottsfhs.org.uk/shop/parishregisterlist.pdf

Thomas's baptism doesn't seem to appear on the CD - there seems to be a gap for 1810. But I think all the records I mentioned can also be found on FamilySearch.

I was given the Notts CDs this Christmas and it is the best present I've had in years. :D
