Everton - Springfield
« on: Friday 30 December 11 16:59 GMT (UK) »
I have been searching for the family of William Kelsall Tait, who is shown on the 1851 census as living in Springfield where his wife was running a school.  I assumed that this was Springfield that runs from St Anne St to Soho St until I looked at the enumerators road pattern which has it running from Lansdown Place to Walton Breck Road. - ie in Everton.  In Gore's 1843 directory 2 Springfields are given - one is Everton, but I can't find any other information.  Anybody any clues to this?

They were called Springfield, St Annes and Springfield, (Mere Lane), Everton to tell them apart. Yours was the latter. It comprised very large mansions, so would have been ideal for a private school. It was on the corner of Mere Lane and Breckfield Road North.

The Liverpool City Engineers did not like having two roads named the same. The 1873 Directory has them both, but yours was gone by 1881. It became Loraine Street and the top end of Monk Street. By 1906 all the large mansions had gone and replaced with high density terraces.

If you search on Bing Maps and switch to birds eye view the area is now a school nursery, gym and hall.

There is a Springfield Park half a mile up the road from Alder Hey hospital...this is very close to Everton FC old training ground...I am wondering if the housing estate at the back of the old EFC training ground is called Springfield....try googling Springfield Park ,Liverpool

Thank you both, Ken and Garstonite.  I have found Springfield on the 1860 map - it was right in the corner so I had missed it.  As you say, beautiful big houses.  I had been wondering about the houses because they moved from a positive mansion in Staffordshire!  The other Springfield just didn't fit.  Thanks again   Phyl
